My review

Brake Failure is the first of Alison Brodie’s books I have read, but it most certainly won’t be my last! I have thoroughly enjoyed Ruby’s story.

The whole book spans the few weeks on the run up to (where most people are stressing about what might happen when the clock strikes midnight) and including New Years Eve 1999. It starts just before midnight on 31st December 1999. Sheriff Hank Gephart has been shot and it seems the shooter might be someone called Ruby. The story then switches to 16 weeks earlier when we first meet Ruby. There is no way on earth this woman would shoot anyone!

It’s obvious quite early on that Ruby has spent her whole life trying to please others (mainly her Step-mother) and competing with her Step-Sister, Claire. Ruby and Claire are chalk and cheese and whilst Claire isn’t a likeable character, she is a fascinating one. I liked Ruby from the start. She’s an insecure character, but finally feels like she has made her mother proud as she marries the respectable Edward. His job should soon take them to live in Paris which delights her, if for no other reason than to make Claire jealous. However, when the plans change she finds herself living in Kansas, miles away from her family and knowing no-one. Ruby is a very reserved character to start with, but she soon starts to come out of her shell when she becomes bored with her lonely life. She doesn’t seem at all committed to Edward and her head is easily turned by other handsome men. One of which she can’t get out of her head, however hard she tries.

Ruby’s story is quite sad in one way. Given her upbringing it’s no wonder she is how she is. It is a very funny story though. I found myself chuckling away quite often throughout, especially during the scenes where Ruby is with her new friends, being very English, but trying her best not to be! Ruby reminds me of that one friend who is hilarious without actually trying to be. I LOVED her diary entries!

The way her story is written is very clever. As the truth about the opening chapter was gradually revealed, I was well and truly gripped. I was quite surprised by it, but I loved the ending! Brilliant!

I’m off to add all of Alison’s other books to my TBR list now 🙂

Many thanks to Alison for my Kindle copy of Brake Failure. I will happily recommend!

Q&A with Alison Brodie

alison-brodie

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I am Scottish and I write romance with suspense, drama and humour.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

They just come to me. Out of the blue. A character nudges into my brain and won’t leave me alone.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

No.

How do you pick your characters names?

Name Your Baby Book. (The main protagonist comes into my head with her own name).

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

I NEVER seek out a story. I let it come to me. I will see or hear something in my head and I will jot down notes. If the story is meant to be told, it will keep coming back. I keep jotting down notes until, finally, I have the most overwhelming urge to write it all out.

I grab a pen and pad and write and write, without stopping, without looking back. Then I type out what looks like Japanese, and put the mss away in a drawer for at least six weeks. When I take it out, I can read it through a stranger’s eyes and see immediately what needs to be removed, or embellished.

This is when the hard works starts: editing and editing – like polishing a sculpture to smooth the edges. Writing effortless reading takes hard work.

Do you have a favourite author?

Tawni O’Dell. Back Roads, Fragile Beasts (I wasn’t keen on her others)

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

J. D. Salinger. I would ask why he gave up writing and disappeared from public view. His short stories are the best. Why didn’t he do more of them? Was he startled by the sudden fame of Catcher in the Rye; did he believe it didn’t deserve that extreme praise; did he get Second Book Syndrome and fear that whatever special ingredient was in Catcher, he couldn’t replicate?

Were you a big reader as a child?

No. Since being a child, though, I have read every genre, and a lot of classics. I have read and enjoyed writers such as T.C. Boyle, Ian McEwan and Tawni O’Dell. I have enjoyed books such as: “Adrian Mole”, “Le Grand Meaulnes,” and “Love Story”.

When did you start to write?

When I started to write. About the age of 5 or 6.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

Back Roads. I wanted a happy ending, especially for the main protagonist, Harley Altmyer.

What are you working on right now?

I am promoting BRAKE FAILURE. Then in mid-January I will give a final edit to a book called, ZENKA, which is set in the 80’s London gangland and tells of a Bulgarian girl who escapes from sex traders. The book is a rom com – I know it doesn’t sound like it!

When can we look forward to a new release?

ZENKA will be released: 1 September, 2017

Description

Brake Failure is a contemporary romance with humour, suspense and a kick-ass heroine.  The story is set in one of the most fascinating periods of America’s history:  the months leading up to Y2K “melt-down.”

“Is it too late to tell him you love him when you’re looking down the barrel of his gun?”

Ruby Mortimer-Smyth is an English debutante, destined for Ladies Day at Ascot and taking tea at The Savoy. She knows the etiquette for every occasion and her soufflés NEVER collapse.

She is in control of her life, tightly in control.  Until fate dumps her down in … Kansas.

Ruby believes that life is like a car; common-sense keeps it on the road, passion sends it into a ditch.  What she doesn’t know is, she’s on a collision course with Sheriff Hank Gephart.

Sheriff Hank Gephart can judge a person.  Miss Mortimer-Smyth might act like the Duchess of England but just under the surface there’s something bubbling, ready to explode.  She’s reckless, and she’s heading for brake failure.  And he’s not thinking about her car.

With the Millennium approaching, Ruby gets caught up in the Y2K hysteria.  She joins a group of Survivalists, who give her a gun and advise her to stockpile basic essentials, such as gasoline and water-purifying tablets.  So she bulk-buys Perrier, Gentleman’s Relish and macaroons.

Ruby, far from home, is making Unsuitable Friends and “finding herself” for the first time.  She falls in with a gang of Hells Angels and falls foul of the law.  At every turn, she comes up hard against Sheriff Hank Gephart, whose blue eyes seem to look deep into her soul.  She desperately wants him but knows she can never have him.

She’s angry and confused at the emotions he arouses in her.  Pushed to her limit, she bursts from her emotional straightjacket.

As the clock strikes midnight of the new Millennium, she’s on a freight train with three million dollars, a bottle of Wild Turkey and a smoking gun.

What happened to Miss Prim-and-Proper?   And why did she shoot Mr Right?

______

Note:  Alison Brodie wrote this story from first-hand experience.  She lived in Kansas during this time and was stunned by the hysteria, unnerved that the US government was spending $150 billion preparing for Armageddon.  As Lionel Shriver says in her novel, We Have To Talk About Kevin:  “1999, a year widely mooted beforehand as the end of the world.”

Excerpt 5 – Brake Failure

‘Ruby!’ Karla shouted. ‘Git yer ass over here, gal.’

She wandered over, aware that he was more stoned than usual. He grabbed her hand and tugged. ‘Come on, Ruby-Ruby; tell us more about the Tower of London.’

She was not at all alarmed by his manner. Although he was built like King Kong, he was a pussy-cat. But she was in no mood for talking. ‘Nah, I’m going back inside,’ she said, making a half-hearted attempt to disengage herself.

‘GET YER HANDS OFF HER!’ The voice cut through the night air.

Gephart was striding towards them, his face murderous.

Karla was on his feet, hands bunched: ‘You talking to me?’ he growled, unaware that he was threatening a cop out of uniform.

‘Yeah, I’m talking to you.’

Karla stepped forward, chin thrust out. ‘What I do with her ain’t none of yer business!’

‘It’s alright!’ Ruby cried, grabbing Gephart’s sleeve to restrain his threatening punch. This was a mistake. With his arm held back, Gephart was unable to defend himself and took the full force of Karla’s fist in his face. Gephart let out a yell and fell back clutching his nose.

Ruby spun to Karla. ‘You idiot! Why on earth did you do that?’

Karla, startled by her verbal attack, didn’t see Hank’s fist coming. It cracked against his jaw, sending him reeling back.

Appalled, she turned angrily to see Hank going in for another punch. ‘STOP IT!’ She jumped between them and held out her hands. ‘THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!’ Goodness, she sounded like the Queen.

It worked, though. The combatants stared at her with a “what-the-hell-was-that” look.

Karla’s girlfriend arrived on the scene, wobbling on spiked heels and screeching. Everyone was making a fuss over Karla, yet no-one cared about Hank, who was bent over, cupping a hand under his bleeding nose. Ruby’s fury turned to pity. She picked up his Stetson.

‘Come on,’ she said, putting a hand on his back. ‘Let’s go inside and I’ll clean you up.’ She steered him towards the entrance, along the corridor and into the ladies lavatory. ‘You shouldn’t have hit him,’ she said, sitting him on a stool by the sink and taking the tube of Savlon from her bag. Apart from a pair of tweezers, the rest of her emergency medical supplies had long ago been abandoned to make space for makeup and perfume.

‘You were in trouble.’

She began filling the sink with hot water. ‘I wasn’t in trouble.’ Gephart was so close; she could feel the power of him.

‘Didn’t look that way to me.’

‘Karla’s my friend. He was just being silly.’ She yanked paper towels from the dispenser, soaked them in water, squeezed them out and began to wipe the blood from Hank’s face. He was staring at her but she refused to meet his gaze. Being so close, she could smell him, the beer on his breath, the smoky smell of hickory wood from his hair, the warm scent of male sweat; musty yet inoffensive. She could see the kink in his noise where it had broken, the crows’ feet at the corner of his eyes.

In the dance hall, the band finished their song with a rousing roll of drums. The roar of chattering voices filled the sudden silence. It was the interval. Females began filing in to the lavatory and, seeing Gephart, rushed forward, squeaking their sympathy. ‘Hank, sweetheart, does it hurt?’ ‘Can I help?’

When a hand reached out to touch his cheek, Ruby slapped it away. She was appalled at this base action. She quickly collected herself: ‘Ladies, please!’ That voice again. ‘We need space.’ Throwing her cautious looks, the females backed off.

Why had she slapped that girl? Shame-faced, Ruby soaked another fistful of paper and began cleaning the side of Gephart’s nose. All around was the sound of flushing loos, the spray of perfume, the click of lipsticks. Then the room went silent as everyone left. From the dance hall came the plaintive sound of a woman singing:

‘Let me ride through the wide open country that I love. Don’t fence me in. Let me be by myself in the evening breeze, listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees, send me off for ever but I ask you please, don’t fence me in …’

When Hank spoke again, his tone was low, dejected. ‘What happened to you at Shady Acres? I was waiting with a bunch of flowers to say thank you.’

She felt a twinge of guilt. He’d bought her flowers. ‘I’m sorry, Hank. I must have gone out the wrong door.’

‘You were running from me again, weren’t you?’

Her glance flickered over his blue eyes and quickly away.

‘Was it because I called you Sweet Cheeks?’

She was silent for a moment then a tiny laugh escaped. ‘Possibly.’

He stared at her. ‘You’re the most beautiful woman I ever did see.’

Ruby knew from the heat in her cheeks that her face had turned the fiercest red. She was panicking, unable to cope with these feelings.

‘How kind,’ she said coolly, trying to re-assert control of her emotions.

She sounded like Claire. Good. Now she had to be Claire.

‘I want you to know I’m more’n just a cop.’ He flexed his right hand – his punching hand – and grimaced. ‘I’m a bull-rider. I’ve won the bull-riders’ championship at Flint Hills Rodeo three years straight, and no-one west of State Line can rope a steer as good as me.’

‘Evidently, you are not a man who sits at home in a smoking jacket listening to Schubert.’ She was using biting sarcasm as a defence and was surprised when he chuckled.

‘Sure don’t sound like me.’ He shifted. ‘I’m building my own house out in Abilene with a veranda looking west to the sunset. And a picket fence that goes all around. Out in the yard there’s a live oak some say was used by Sherman’s scouts.’ He paused. ‘Come out with me Ruby. No strings. Just you and me. Bottle of wine. Steamboat on the Missouri. Moonlight. Then we can talk, start over. What do you say?’

It sounded appealing, and very romantic. All the pieces fitted perfectly, except one:

Him.

It would be like wanting a cuddly cat and being given a tiger. He was too masculine, too overpowering, too much in charge. If she wanted to rock the security of her little world by going off with another man, she would choose Payat. Payat with his gentle manner, his shy dark eyes and, of course, his wildly romantic appeal.

But she wasn’t prepared to go off with another man. Like a filing cabinet, her life was compartmentalised and ordered. Edward was her husband. Payat was a delicious fantasy. And Gephart was the rogue piece of paper that had to go in the bin.

It was time to tell him she was married.

‘I’m mar-’ She stopped and thought: This man is a cop, a control freak. What if he has the old-fashioned notion that this little lady should be at home with hubbie and not in some seedy bar mixing with drug-fuelled Hells Angels? What if, in a fit of pique, he tells Edward? Then I’m in big trouble and all “shore leave” will be revoked – permanently.

Hank sighed. ‘Sometimes I get the feeling you don’t like me.’

‘Possibly.’

He grabbed her wrist. Astonished, she found herself staring him straight in the eyes. ‘No, you don’t dislike me, Ruby,’ he whispered. ‘In fact, I bet if I asked nicely, you’d give me a kiss.’

She had the sensation of standing on railroad tracks and feeling, or imagining, the far-off trembling of something large racing her way. And yet she was powerless to move away as much as a step.

‘Go on, Ruby, I’ve been injured in the line of duty. Give me a kiss.’

‘No.’ His hand felt like a steel band around her wrist.

‘I saved your hide.’ Although his tone was cheeky, his eyes pleaded.

‘Then will you to let me go?’

‘I promise.’

‘Alright,’ she conceded, telling herself that for right or wrong, he was now sitting here because he’d believed she’d needed rescuing. She lowered her head, touched her lips to his cheek and jerked back.

His face was stamped with indignation. ‘What the hell was that?’ he thundered.

‘A kiss.’

‘I meant on the lips.’

She stared down at his mouth. A voice in her head told her to do it, another voice told her to run like hell. But she couldn’t run; not with him holding her. She bent and quickly pecked him on the lips. ‘There! That’s a kiss.’

‘Where I come from lady that was no kiss.’

He stood up abruptly. She sensed what was about to happen and felt the flutter of giant wings open inside her chest. But before she could step away, he pulled her against him, one hand coming around her to hold her arms, the other gripping the back of her head. She was immobilised, unable to turn from his advancing kiss. He lowered his head and slowly brushed his mouth across hers; she could feel his breath coming into her. She felt a dart of hot desire shoot up from between her legs. Then his mouth was on hers, pressing down…

A cheer of female voices and male wolf-whistles erupted from the doorway. Hearing it, Hank lifted his head to his audience, his arms loosening their hold on her. ‘Now that’s a kiss!’ he smirked.

Humiliated, she slapped him across the cheek and strode for the door. Laughter broke over her head like a wave. She shouldered her way through a jubilant crowd of heavily perfumed females and grinning cowboys. The bastard had got a laugh at her expense!

A man shouted out. ‘Hey, Hank, I got a notion she don’t like you!’

Another man agreed. ‘You ain’t gonna be herdin’ that pretty heifer into yer corral any time soon.’

In the babble of voices she heard: ‘… got yerself a maverick.’ ‘… Roxanne.’

It wasn’t until she was outside that she realised she was crying.

Q&A

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I’m originally from Indiana but I have lived in the Atlanta area for the past forty-some years. I’ve worked at newspapers, owned a small printing shop, and up until a few years ago, I was a cafeteria manager at an elementary school. Now I work at home, writing books. I also teach exercise classes to senior citizens three days a week.

My first novel H10N1 was published in 2011. It’s about a flu pandemic that doesn’t get stopped, so there are lots of dead people. Two of the survivors, a man and a woman, are thrown together by a common goal: finding a safe place away from the looters and marauders. Unfortunately, they don’t get along.

Book number two was The Ups and Downs of Being Dead. A 57 year-old man is told he is dying but he can’t accept this death sentence. He’s heard about cryonics and decides to have his body ‘frozen’ until science can find a cure and bring him back to life. He thinks he’ll go to sleep and wake up in the future but he soon discovers his soul is very much awake. Not only that, he’s able to come and go as he pleases.

I moved away from Speculative Fiction for my third novel, Losing It All. This mainstream drama tells the story of a homeless Vietnam vet in the 1980s who has been living on the streets since he came back from the war. When he meets a homeless woman who has two small children, he is compelled to forget his own problems and help her. (This book has been very popular with book clubs.)

The call of the future brought me back to Speculative Fiction for book number four, Habits Kick Back, where a college co-ed decides she’s tired of taking all of the pills to help her concentrate in class, to retain what she has learned, to keep her weight under control, and to suppress her sexuality. Once she kicks the supplements, she finds that hamburgers and French fries are delicious, and the guy who has been a good friend is also super sexy.

Still in the Speculative Fiction genre, I wrote A Tale of Moral Corruption that takes place in the future when women are in control of both the corporate and political world. Men are the clerks and assistants. The main character, Mason, can’t wait to get married and wear one of the popular artificial wombs that men have strapped to their bellies, carrying their unborn babies. Unfortunately, his plans go terribly awry.

Where do you get your ideas?

Sometimes it’s something or someone I see. Other times, it’s a news story about the latest technology. I never know what cockamamie idea will pop into my head.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Sure. A lot of my characters have mannerisms or speech patterns that I recognize in friends or even myself. And of course, most of the sick humor comes from me.

How do you pick your characters names?

I try hard to make names readable, and short. There’s nothing worse than reading a book with a character named Jehosephat that makes you stop and sound it out every time you see it.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Well, let’s see. First I make a pot of green tea, then sit at my computer and read my emails, any messages on Facebook, and notifications on Twitter. Then I open my document, read what I wrote yesterday, and go back to the kitchen for something to eat. I talk to my cats, I grab a broom and sweep off the front porch, clean the litter box, take another look at what I’ve written, then wander out to the deck to see if any of my plants need watering.

(I have given serious thought to having a seat belt installed on my desk chair!)

With all of my procrastination, I still manage to get one novel a year written.

Do you have a favourite author?

Not really. Sometimes I read big-named authors. Other times I enjoy reading an author’s first novel. I read both traditional authors and self-published. If the story grabs me, I’m happy.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I guess I’d like to meet Stephen King and I’d ask him to plug my books.

Were you a big reader as a child?

Oh, sure. One of the most unfortunate results of reading so much was that I read In Cold Blood as a young teen. I was scared to death for several years that someone was going to come and kill my family.

When did you start to write?

I’ve always enjoyed telling stories, but I didn’t seriously try to write a book until I was married and staying at home with babies. I thought I’d have plenty of time to write. Ha!!

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I’d change Yertle the Turtle. It would be a sneeze instead of a burp.

Just kidding. There are always books that don’t end the way I would like. Sometimes I just change the ending in my head. Or a book that has an open ending is fun because I get to end it the way I want. But I can’t criticize an author for an ending. It’s the way they envisioned the book.

I’ve often wanted to tell people who leave unsatisfactory reviews because they didn’t like the ending: ‘Next time, write your own book.’

What are you working on right now?

I’m back to mainstream fiction, although this time it’s a comedy/mystery called Up To No Good. My character is a neighborhood busybody. (Her husband even calls her Gladys after the nosy neighbor in the TV show Bewitched.) She thinks a house in her neighborhood is being used to video porn movies because she never sees any signs of life: no hose in the yard, no garbage cans at the curb. Needless to say, she gets into a lot of hot water because she can’t mind her own business.

Do you have a new release due?

I was all set to release the book on December 10. Then I received the great news that my book was accepted into the Kindle Scout program with Kindle Press. Interesting note here: The book was originally called Gladys and the Porn House. The publishers love the story but they weren’t too hot on using Porn in the title. (Evidently, if you google the title you get hits of people getting nasty!)

I agreed to change the title to Up To No Good. I definitely didn’t want my book pigeon-holed with erotica exclusively. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) So now I have a new publisher and a new book.

The new release date is December 31, 2016. How’s that for getting it in just under the wire?

Lizzie’s Christmas Escape by Christie Barlow @ChristieJBarlow @bookouture #BookReview

Lizzie's Christmas Escape: A sparkling feel good Christmas romance by [Barlow, Christie]

Publisher: Bookouture (21st October 2016)

Why has it taken me this long to read a book by Christie Barlow???

I was determined to read at least one Christmassy book this month and I decided on Lizzie’s Christmas Escape after seeing such fabulous reviews for it. I can totally see why everyone has been recommending it as I have absolutely loved it! I would have finished it in a couple of days, I think, had it not been a busy time of year, but I can honestly say I have been completely immersed in the characters and their stories. It’s one of those books that I have thought about when not having the time to carry on reading, but still wondering what the characters might get up to next.

Lizzie and Henry were childhood sweethearts. They married and had their two daughter’s young. They are now in their early 40’s and their girls are away at University. It should be the time where they are enjoying their new found freedom as a couple and enjoying quality time together, but all Henry seems interested in is sitting in his arm chair, watching the darts, not saying much to Lizzie other than ‘What’s for tea?’. As a result Lizzie is feeling very lonely and unloved and is not quite sure what to do to put a bit of spark back in to their marriage. Have they nothing in common anymore, now the girls have grown up and flown the nest?

I’m sure lots of readers will relate to Lizzie’s situation. It made me very thankful for my husband. I’m very lucky that we are as lovey-dovey now as when we first got together and we are very much enjoying spending more quality time together as a couple now that our children are getting older. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a Mum. I have been a stay-at-home Mum for over 16 years. It’s the best job ever! But I do think it’s important for parents to remember that they are still a couple also. Time alone occasionally is lovely. I would be heartbroken if I thought my Hubby had gone off me!

Given Lizzie’s low mood, it’s not a huge surprise when her head is turned by a handsome new neighbour arriving in their cul-de-sac. It isn’t long before Marcus is paying her the attention she so desperately craves from Henry. Is he worth risking her marriage over though?

I really liked Lizzie and totally felt for her, feeling so miserable and stuck in a rut at such a young age, especially on the run up to Christmas. It’s not surprising she is tempted by the romance and excitement of Marcus. She is an instantly likeable character who I could totally see myself being friends with in real life.

The same goes for her best friend, Ann. Ann is brilliant. I loved her! She is completely different to Lizzie, but their friendship is heart-warming. Again, I’m very lucky to have friendships as special as theirs.

I don’t want to say too much about the storyline, but I can’t recommend this book highly enough! I was completely engrossed . It made me smile, laugh and cry. It’s the perfect story about love, loss, family and the magic of true friendship. It’s definitely one I will always remember and happily recommend to anyone and everyone!

I completely loved the fact that Lizzie has Gary Barlow in her pantry and talks to him daily also! Just brilliant! 🙂

Description:

A gorgeous country house hotel, a liberal dusting of snow, a cosy weekend away…what more could Lizzie ask for at Christmas?

Every Christmas Lizzie promises herself that things will change and she will leap into the new year a new woman. And yet here she is again, at the beginning of December and nothing is different. Her girls have grown up and left home, her husband Henry is slumped in front of the TV and she is alone in the kitchen, seeking refuge in the cooking sherry and talking to her Gary Barlow calendar. She’s also been very diverted by handsome new neighbour Marcus and she knows she shouldn’t be …

So when best friend Ann suggests a weekend away in the country, Lizzie jumps at the chance. Will this Christmas escape give Lizzie some much needed perspective and allow her to mend her marriage? Or will Marcus prove to be too much of a distraction?

A funny feel good festive read about rediscovering the magic of Christmas – just the thing to curl up with on a cold winter’s night.

My Review

Wow! This is an awesome psychological thriller!

Having read and enjoyed Paranormal Intruder and Love You To Death by Caroline Mitchell, I was very much looking forward to reading Witness and I absolutely loved it!

Becky is married to a lovely man and they have a beautiful daughter together. Her life couldn’t be more different to 10 years previously when her testimony sent her partner at the time, Solomon, to prison. She hopes more than anything that her past is firmly behind her, but when she learns that Solomon has been released she can’t help looking over her shoulder and it isn’t long before he makes his presence known.

Rebecca met the seemingly charming Solomon at a time in her life when she was particularly vulnerable. Her beloved mother was dying of cancer and Rebecca was struggling to imagine her life without her. When she met Solomon it seemed like he was totally meant to be what she needed to move on with her life and be happy (her mother’s dying wish for her). He soon starts to reveal his true colours though.

The story is told mainly from Becky’s point of view, between the present day and through her journal entries, written at the time of her relationship with Solomon. As the reader, Solomon’s controlling behaviour is very obvious from that start, but Rebecca just sees a kind, caring man who is looking after her as she grieves for her mother. She has no idea just what kind of man she is involved with until his behaviour escalates and she starts to fear for her safety. She is finally free of him when her testimony sees him convicted of murder. That is until he is released. He’s had 10 long years to plan his revenge and he’s looking forward to making Rebecca play his game!

Witness is an immensely tense and creepy read. Imagine receiving a text like this: “Fail to respond and you get hurt. Talk to police and you die. Ready to play? You have sixty seconds to decide…..”

Becky knows exactly what Solomon is capable of and feels she has no other choice but to play along, if she is to keep her family safe. But where will it end? Can she really stand by and watch innocent people getting hurt?

How far would you go to protect those you love?

A terrifying story with a shocking conclusion! Brilliant!

Many thanks to the author and publisher for my Kindle copy via Netgalley and to Caroline Mitchell for inviting me to take part in her fabulous blog tour! 🙂

Description:

To Rebecca it was a brave decision that led to her freedom from domestic abuse. To Solomon it was the ultimate betrayal.

It’s been ten years since Rebecca’s testimony saw Solomon locked away. Enough time for the nightmares to recede, the nerves to relax; enough time to rebuild her life and put the past behind her.

Then one day a phone rings in her bedroom—but it’s not her phone. Solomon has been in her home, and has a very simple message for her: for each of the ten years he has spent in jail, Rebecca must witness a crime. And, to make matters worse, she has to choose the victims.

Fail to respond and you get hurt. Talk to police and you die. Ready to play? You have sixty seconds to decide…

As the crimes grow more severe, the victims closer to home, Rebecca is forced to confront a past she had hoped was gone forever.

#AskMeAnything with #bookblogger Kate Moloney @BibliophileBC

A big thank you to Kate for joining in with my #AskMeAnything feature 🙂

kate-moloney

My name is Kate and I’m a married mum of two from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. I’ve been reader all  my life and it’s something that I’m keen to pass on to my kids as well.
Reading has always been my favourite thing to do. I was never into sports (unless speed reading counts?!🙂 ) and I’m really quite shy so books have been my constant companions.
I’m so lucky because book-blogging has given me an outlet to rave about what I’m reading as well as the opportunity to connect with authors I admire too. I’ve also made some great friends thanks to a shared love of books, my fellow blogsquad bunch are the best!
Kate blogs at https://bibliophilebookclub.com/

1 – What’s the biggest buzz you get from blogging?

Ooooh, I don’t know. Reading amazing books counts, right?! Seeing myself quoted in books is awesome!!! I get a little ripple of joy reading a book pre-publication too, especially if you know it ‘s going to go stellar!!! Then there are those moments when an author whose work you’ve read and admired acknowledges your review of their book, that’s always cool. I find it really odd that thanks to social media, we are all connected even though we may never meet. I’m a huge Chris Carter fan, and last year I emailed him on the offchance that he may see it, and I ended up having a q&a with him on my blog which was huge for me! And this year I actually flew to London for an Orenda Books book launch. Not only did I get to meet Karen Sullivan (publisher) and Victoria Goldman from Off The Shelf Books and some other fab bookish folk, but I got to meet Ragnar Jónasson, which was a pinch-me moment because I just love his Dark Iceland series. Next year, I’m also a character in a book (A Room Full of Killers by Michael Wood), it doesn’t get much better than that!

2 – What Irish writers do you think we should read who perhaps aren’t widely known outside Ireland?

Herein lies a problem for me, because as such, I don’t tend to read Irish fiction. I read a huge amount of crime fiction and I tend to lean towards USA or UK-based books if I’m honest. However, I read and loved Liz Nugent’s Lying in Wait this year. I also have Carmel Harrington, Sinead Crowley, Cecelia Ahern and Benjamin Black on my TBR, and I’ve heard great things about them, so I’m sure I will get to them eventually and report back!

3 – If you were stranded on a desert island what three books would you want with you?

This one is a tough question! I don’t re-read books so it’s not like I can say I want to take my comfort reads with me! So, I guess I’ll have to go with Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Killing Floor by Lee Child and Snowblind by Ragnar Jónasson. Magic, machismo and murder should keep me busy reading!!

4 – How much did your own parents influence your love of reading and what techniques do you use to encourage your own children to read avidly?

My parents aren’t really readers, so in that sense books weren’t foisted on me when I was young. I developed a love of stories when I was small though, and my parents used to make them up for me. I must have shown enough of an interest because books were a natural progression. Books have always been a constant companion for me, so it was only natural to hope that passes on to my kids! We read books every day, and my son reads to his little sister too now which is lovely. I have bookshelves full of books, and I think they see that and want some for themselves. My youngest just turned two, and of course, she got books for her birthday. Lately I’ve been reading The Gruffalo maybe 20 times a day, so I can pretty much say the entire thing without looking at it, as it’s the clear favourite in the house!

5 – One thing you can’t live without (apart from books)?

Apart from my air, family and friends etc? I’d possibly have to go with my phone! Especially since I started blogging, because all of the apps I need and use are on it. And I’m addicted to Candy Crush! Or my kindle!? It’s not technically a book right?!

6 – Has the movie ever been better than the book?

I don’t know if I’m honest! Even now, aside from the Harry Potter movies, I’m struggling to think of a book I’ve read that I’ve enjoyed as a movie!

7 – What make-up do you use?

Hahahaha! On the RARE occasion that I get a chance to put on make up, it’s usually something cheap and cheerful. My brows seem to be what I’m asked about most, and all I use is a Collection Eyebrow Pallette from Boots that’s maybe €4! I use Urban Decay Naked 3 Pallette for shadow, L’Oreal Blockbuster Liquid Eyeliner and 17 Falsifeye mascara in black! See a trend there? It’s usually only ever eye make up!!!

8 – If you could read a book which contained three of your all time favourite book characters, which three would you choose?

I would have to choose Ari Thor from Ragnar Jónasson’s The Dark Iceland series, most definitely Jack Reacher from Lee Child’s books and maybe Severus Snape from HP. (My favourite series are pretty evident in this post aren’t they?!)

9 – Be honest Kate, how many books do you really own v’s how many pairs of shoes?

Ok… be honest… I have maybe 10 pairs of heels and a couple of pairs of boots and runners. I used to LOOOOOOOOVE my shoes, but then I had back problems so I wasn’t able to wear them for months!

At last count, my TBR alone was 850, and I probably own about half of that again, so I guess its  safe bet to say that I have over 1000 books between physical TBR, kindle, books I’m keeping and all of my signed first editions or books I’m quoted in!

10 – How do you do anything with your fab nails so perfect all the time?

I get loads done funnily enough, they’re gel nails so they’re really sturdy! I get them refilled every few weeks and change them up a bit, I’ve had them for ages now so I’m well used to them. I also like how fun the claws look in book photos!

11 – What’s your favourite ‘hardly heard of’ book?

I don’t know to be honest. I tend to read a lot of commercial crime fiction, but if I had to pick one I think I would go with The Lobster Boy and The Fat Lady’s Daughter by Charles Kriel. It was published by Fahrenheit Press last year. It’s one of the most unique books I’ve read, and I still think about it. I would highly recommend it if you’re looking for something different.

12 – Who is your favourite literary villain?

Villains are a funny ilk. I think that some of the best villains in books are those you’re not expecting. This is most prevalent in psychological thrillers, especially with the domestic noir of late. I mean, how well do we really know those closest to us? The best villains are the ones you’re not expecting so I can’t in good conscience choose one for fear of spoiling a book!

13 – What’s your favourite book that involves spies?

Espionage thrillers aren’t really a genre that I’ve read much of to be honest so I can’t really pick one. I’m sure there’s probably one somewhere that I’ve read, but for the life of me I can’t think of one at the moment!

14 – I am a like my book lover just like you. I recently decided to start blogging, giving reviews about books I’ve read. I review mostly someone old books that I read in the past, I have not ventured into upcoming and new publications yet. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for me on this journey?

If I had to pick, I would suggest Ragdoll by Daniel Cole, Deep Down Dead by Steph Broadribb, Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski and Pendulum by Adam Hamdy.

15 – Shoes or handbags?

Handbags!!! I have tons of them, more than shoes!!! I love them, but they have to be able to fit a large hardback and/or kindle into them. That’s what I look for in a handbag, will it fit my book?!

16 – What’s on the menu for Christmas dinner?

At the time of writing, I have absolutely no idea! For the first time in nearly 9 years, we’re going to spend Christmas Day in my mother in law’s house. I don’t know what she’s cooking, but I’m sure it will be delicious as she is a great cook. Dessert is more my thing though, so here’s hoping there’s meringues and fresh fruit!!

17 – Will you be making any new year resolutions? If so, what will they be and are you good at sticking to them?

I am rubbish at resolutions to be fair, so I don’t tend to make any! I’m not a planner, so resolutions and me do not go well together.

18 – Which book are you most looking forward to reading in 2017?

I know there are a ton of great books coming out in 2017. As I type this, I have 14 books on a shelf for next year waiting to be read, I just need to find the time. I am eager to read Michael Wood’s A Room Full of Killers though. It’s the next instalment in the DCI Matilda Darke series, and I am a character in the book!!! Needless to say, I want to know if I live or die!!!

19 – I know you’ve been in a bit of a reading slump recently, but your read list is amazing! How many books exactly have you read so far this year and how many are you aiming for next year?

As I type this, I have read 158 books so far this year. My Goodreads reading challenge was 75 books, so it’s safe to say I passed that! Reading slumps are awful, and I’m still not back at full capacity with this one. I’m reading but nothing is quite hitting the mark for me for the past few weeks, so here’s hoping that goes away soon!

Next year I am going to set it to 52 books. One book a week. The pressure I put on myself at times was too much this year, and I do not plan on making the same mistake in 2017.

20 – Do you bake your own Christmas Cake?

Erm, no. Do I eat Christmas Cake? No. I don’t get it. I’ve never been a fan of fruit cake, and though I’ve tried it, I just don’t like it. We don’t do traditional Christmas food in our house really, none of us like it so it doesn’t happen!

Thanks so much for letting me take part in this Kerry. It was fun trying to answer these questions! xx

It has been my pleasure, Kate. xx

A big thank you to all who sent questions for Kate 🙂

My Review

Well, Louise Jensen certainly knows how to keep a reader turning those pages!

Having read and enjoyed The Sister back in July, I was very excited to read The Gift.

Jenna is recovering from a heart transplant after suddenly falling ill. She is on quite a concoction of medication designed to prevent her body from rejecting her new heart. She knows the possible side effects, but nothing prepares her for the dreams and unusual feelings she starts to experience. She starts to believe she is seeing her donor’s memories and begins to research the possibility. She discovers the theory of Cellular Memory. A theory that more experts are beginning to support. They believe the heart holds memories that can be transferred to the organs recipient. Jenna becomes more and more convinced that this is what is happening to her and she has an overwhelming feeling that her donor, Callie, is trying to tell her something. Something feels very, very wrong and she is determined to find out what.

She arranges to meet her donor’s parents, against medical advice, and her obsession with Callie strengthens. What is she trying to tell her? She can’t seem to focus properly on anything else. She’s not sleeping or eating properly. She hasn’t been back at work for long before things start to go wrong. Her friendships and relationships are strained and she wonders herself, at times, if she might be losing her mind. She was totally unprepared for the truth!

I was hooked from the very first page and as I was discovering the truth I was more and more gobsmaked by each chapter. There are twists I never saw coming and many of the characters shocked me with the secrets they had been keeping! Just brilliant!

Jenna is a very likeable character. I warmed to her immediately. I can only imagine what it must feel like to think you’re going to die one minute then find yourself on the road to recovery, but only because someone else has died. It must be natural to feel some guilt despite being thankful to be alive. Such conflicting emotions.

The Gift is a brilliantly written, fast-paced and original story which kept me up late at night as I just needed to read just one more chapter!

I can safely say that Louise Jenson is now another one of my favourite authors and I look forward to her future work.

A big thank you to Bookouture for my auto-approval on Netgalley and to Kim Nash for inviting me to take part in the blog tour for this brilliant book.
