Q&A with author, Rebekah Louise @RebekahBe4

I am delighted to welcome Rebekah Louise today! 🙂

Rebekah Louise self-published Love, Life & Dreams: A cocktail of five short stories on 25th May 2017.

Rebekah Louise

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

Hi, I’m Rebekah Louise. I am 32 and live in Worcestershire with my family. The things I love to do the most when I’m not writing is to spend time with family and friends. I enjoy cups of coffee with a large slice of cake (preferably chocolate). I also am a fan of yoga and going out for a cocktail or two.

My book is called Love, Life & Dreams and is a collection of five short stories. The idea behind the book was for women (men too if they like a bit of chick lit) to be able to sneak away for 10 minutes to read a full story in one go. Each story is unique so hopefully there is something for everyone.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

Various places. An idea may have been sparked from something I have watched on T.V. or a conversation I’ve been part of (or overheard). I have formed some of my stories using a title or a theme, using this to create ideas and a plot.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Yes, when I am bringing my characters to life I often think about people’s traits, mannerisms, likes and dislikes and I may form a person from that.

How do you pick your characters names?

They have to suit the individual so I imagine what they would look like and choose an appropriate name. Other times it may be a name I like and I pair it with the best character in that particular story.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Idea, jot down notes, turn the notes into a bubble diagram, start writing, research, write some more and then edit.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

In no particular order I would have to say:

Sophie Kinsella

Jane Fallon

Holly Seddon

Liane Moriarty

B.A. Paris

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I think it would be Sophie Kinsella. I would like to know where her inspiration comes from and the key to her success in the literature world. I am quite nosey so I would also want to ask her about what her life is like behind closed doors – what does she enjoy doing? Favourite foods, that kind of thing.

Were you a big reader as a child?

No, not really. I enjoyed Malory Towers and Sweet Valley High books when I was a teenager.

When did you start to write?

I started a blog about four years ago and I enjoyed connecting with people through my writing and sharing my experiences. I then began writing stories about a year ago.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I think I would choose ‘Behind Closed Doors’ by B.A. Paris. As much as I enjoyed the story, the ending was too abrupt. I wanted to know what happened next. I would want to see her husband brought to justice in the public eye. I would also like to know what happened to the main character (Grace) and how she re-builds her life?

Is there a book you wish you had written?

No, I think the ideas behind each book and story is personal to each author.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

Mmm something like, The Life of a Chicholic.

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

I would invite Sex & the City character Charlotte. I think I would enjoy settling down in a cute tea shop with her, sipping tea from china cups whilst eating cream scones.

What are you working on right now?

At the moment I am planning my next story. I am thinking of taking one of my short stories and continuing the journey the character is on.

Do you have a new release due?

No, not yet. Within the next year would be great.

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

On the release of Love, Life & Dreams it was just me and my little boy at home – we had cheese sandwiches and went to the park. So hopefully with my next book we will do something a bit more grand.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

I love to hear from readers, I am on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and have a website too.

You can find them all here: www.rebekahlouiseauthor.co.uk

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

Just a big thank you to those of you who have read Love, Life & Dreams and if you haven’t yet, I hope you will enjoy reading it.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Rebekah Louise 🙂

The Serial Killer’s Daughter by Lesley Welsh #BlogTour #BookReview @bookouture @KimTheBookworm

I am very honoured to be taking part in Lesley Welsh’s blog tour for The Serial Killer’s Daughter.

The-Serial-Killers-Daughter-Blog-Tour.jpeg

Many thanks to Kim Nash for the opportunity to join in.

My review…..

Wow! This Don Tyler is a piece of work! To say he’s disturbed would be the understatement of understatements.

I’m not quite sure what I was expecting when I started The Serial Killer’s Daughter. Obviously I wasn’t expecting a lovey dovey romance, given the title, but I was not prepared for the truly awful crimes committed by this evil psychopath. This story isn’t for the faint-hearted or for anyone who is easily offended by vulgar language, but it is an interesting insight into the mind of a serial killer who kills for no other reason than just because they can and because they continually manage to avoid capture. I know this is fiction, but we all know there are people like this roaming our earth.

Don comes across to me as being an average looking bloke, but one who is successful with the ladies because he has the gift of the gab and is able to switch on the charm when it suits. He has no regard for human life, just his own selfish and sadistic desires and the need to do whatever it takes to get him what, who and where he wants. He has serious Mummy issues and he doesn’t even love his own children.

When his daughter, Suzanne, is contacted by Rose (Don’s current partner), as Don has passed away and she has some personal belongings to pass on, she has no idea of the situation she is walking into or the danger she will face thanks to her own father.

There are lots of characters, all with their own integral part to the story. Don is a scarily intelligent, manipulative character. There are twists and turns galore which kept me gripped from start to finish. The story flows perfectly with numerous shocking truths uncovered along the way. Brilliantly written with excellent characterisation. I highly recommend.

Publisher: Bookouture (14th June 2017)

Suzanne Tyler barely knew her father. But when she’s given a series of secret diaries and eight mysterious photographs of women from his possessions, she knows she won’t be able to rest until she knows the truth about him.

To Suzanne’s shock, one of the photos is of her friend Sophie, who died ten years ago in an unexplained and devastating fire.

But Don only met Sophie once, on an unsettling visit he paid Suzanne just days before Sophie’s death… So why did he have a picture of her?

Unable to let Sophie’s memory alone, Suzanne begins to dig into her father’s life. What horrors is she about to unearth in his diaries? And who is it that’s out there, watching her every move?

Scared to Death (Detective Kay Hunter series Book 1) by @RachelAmphlett #BookReview

Scared to Death (The Detective Kay Hunter series) (Detective Kay Hunter crime thriller series Book 1) by [Amphlett, Rachel]

Publisher: Saxon Publishing (3rd December 2016)

“If you want to see your daughter alive again, listen carefully.”

When the body of a snatched schoolgirl is found in an abandoned biosciences building, the case is first treated as a kidnapping gone wrong.

But Detective Kay Hunter isn’t convinced, especially when a man is found dead with the ransom money still in his possession.

When a second schoolgirl is taken, Kay’s worst fears are realised.

With her career in jeopardy and desperate to conceal a disturbing secret, Kay’s hunt for the killer becomes a race against time before he claims another life.

For the killer, the game has only just begun…

My review…..

Well, I recently joined in with Rachel Amphlett’s blog tour for Book 3 in this series, so I thought it was about time I bumped Book 1 to the top of my list and I am so glad I did! Why have I never read a book by Rachel Amphlett before now??

Scared to Death is a brilliant start to a new series. I warmed to Detective Kay Hunter immediately. There’s a back story there that hasn’t been fully explained as yet, which I find very intriguing. She seems to be up against her fair share of negativity at work, via certain colleagues, although others very much seem to have her back. We also get an insight in to her personal life and her relationship with her partner, which I like as it shows a softer side to an otherwise professional character.

Kay and her team are faced with the difficult task of investigating the death of a local 17 year old girl who had been kidnapped whilst her parents were on a business trip. A ransom had been demanded, her parents had paid and not reported the kidnapping as requested, as they believed their daughter would be spared if they cooperated. When they arrive at her location, however, their worst fears are realised. Every parents worst nightmare. The way this poor girl met her end is nothing short of horrific and these parts of the story are very upsetting. Her killer is a very disturbed character.

When a second girl is kidnapped, Kay and her colleagues race against time to figure out where she is being kept before it’s too late and this time it’s personal. There is a very sick game being played which makes this a very dark crime thriller. Just brilliant!

Scared To Death is a very cleverly written police procedural with a tense and fast-paced storyline. There are many plot twists and shocks along the way. I was totally gripped and I’m very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend you add this to your reading list. It’s definitely one I would happily buy as a gift for family and friends.

Many thanks to Rachel Amphlett for my review copy. It’s very much appreciated, as always.

Many thanks to Karen Bultiauw, at Accent Press, for the opportunity to take part.

Q&A with Grace Lowrie…..

Grace Lowrie

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

Hi Kerry, thank you so much for inviting me to your blog.

I’m a romantic introvert with a penchant for rock music, art nouveau design, blue cheese and grumpy ginger tomcats. Having worked as a collage artist, sculptor, prop maker and garden designer over the years, I now write contemporary women’s fiction from my Hertfordshire home. Safe With Me is a standalone novel, the first of three, set in the fictional town of Wildham. It is my second novel to be published by Accent Press.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

I’m fascinated by human relationships and tend to conjure up intriguing questions in my mind, for example: What if you were abandoned as a child and your only family was a foster brother/sister? What if you were then separated? Would that bond always exist between you? In this case the answering of these questions led me to create Safe With Me.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

I don’t think so – I tend to draw on aspects of a variety of different people’s personalities, both real or imagined, to create my characters. Some of my friends and family may recognise parts of themselves in the pages of my books, but hopefully never enough for them to take any offence.

How do you pick your characters names?

That’s often tricky as the name can make or break a character for a reader. Sometimes a name comes instinctively once I start hearing my character’s voice but not always, and I do prefer to put a name to the voice early on. One of my favourite sources of inspiration is watch the closing credits of films and TV shows – it’s a great way of picking up interesting and unusual names.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

I tend to start with a great idea for an ending and a feel for some strong characters and then plot to create a beginning and a middle. Life is busy and I haven’t yet managed to carve out a set time each day in which to write, but I’m constantly scribbling notes and bits of dialogue on scraps of paper and then spend hours at a time typing furiously at my laptop.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Wow that’s tough, that changes all the time. Right now I’d have to say: Kate Atkinson, Lucie Whitehouse, Ian Banks, Diana Gabaldon and Iain McEwan.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I would like to meet Audrey Niffenegger to ask her about the sequel to The Time Traveler’s Wife that I believe she’s working on.

Were you a big reader as a child?

Yes. My parents are both keen readers and got my sister and I into books from an early age. After a long day at work my dad would fall asleep reading The Hobbit to me at bedtime – somehow he managed to keep talking but all the words would turn to gibberish as he drifted off.

When did you start to write?

As soon as I was able – I wrote a lot of poetry and short stories at school and won a competition for a Haiku about a post box. I stopped during my teenage years, through a lack of confidence more than anything, but found my way back to it again about ten years ago on a lonely trip to Malta.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I loved reading The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton but I found the ending frustrating – too many loose ends that I would like to tidy up. I’m hoping she’s working on a sequel.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor is absolute genius but easily accessible – everybody I recommend it to loves it. I’m really looking forward to reading his latest work; Reservoir 13.

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

Is it shallow to say Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books? I’d invite him to my place for coffee so that I wouldn’t have to share him with the rest of the female population.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently editing the next two books in The Wildham Series and writing the first draft of a fourth.

Do you have a new release due?

Safe With Me is due out on 22nd June 2017 and is already available to pre-order here:

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

I have a bottle of bubbly on ice ready to share with my family, as a thank you for all their support.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

I have a website http://www.gracelowrie.com and a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/GraceLowrieWriter and can also be found on twitter @gracelowrie1.

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

Only that I’m very grateful for this opportunity and appreciate all the readers out there that make being an author so rewarding.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Grace 🙂

Excerpt…..

Chapter 1

Peter saw her. And he saw men at the bar ogling her every curve.

The waitress scrap-of-nothing she wore accentuated the length and shape of her legs, clad in net stockings. How she managed to walk on stiletto heels was beyond his male comprehension. The flimsy froth of fabric barely covered her bottom and had her breasts nearly spilling from the Grand Canyon neckline, to the delight of every male eye in the smoke-filled room.

He brushed rain-damp hair off his brow, warring with his gut instinct to stride over, sling her across his shoulder, and take her home. Hot blood surged through him and his aorta boxed his chest. Home where she belonged, with him, and in his bed—

The crash of glass jolted him from plunging deeper into the erotic fantasy. Since she’d run out on him, his mind was set on replay…a constant rankling to his Italian pride.

A muscle assaulted his jaw.

Her rebellious escapade could bring him down, and her with him. Premeditated or a case of the lamb amidst wolves? His chest constricted. It was time to set the record straight, even the score. Although he had to move fast to snare the coup d’ etat he was after, he’d do it his way. He inhaled, filling his lungs with needed oxygen and grimaced at the smoke-tainted air in the club. He exhaled and snared her in his narrow focus.

She was floundering to pick up broken glass from the floor. Her admirers were moving in, but in two long strides he was beside her.

The spinning strobe light cast a halo around her, making her hair gold and her skin a shimmer of silk. Memories rushed in, taunting, smothering… and he almost changed his mind. Passion and anger raged inside him. Pent-up pressure in his chest sizzled between his teeth and banished the past, but only for the moment.

“Let me help you.” He hunkered down, playing knight gallant but feeling more like a Neanderthal. His words held a double meaning for this woman, who kept a special place in his heart, his life, and who had spurned his every effort. Why would she have left him otherwise? Without a word, without a backward glance?

The deep timbre of the man’s voice filtered to Ellie through the music and laughter, but she kept her head bent until the embarrassed blush receded from her features. “Thank you.”

He dropped a handful of sharp pieces onto her tray, and the gold cufflink on his white shirt cuff gleamed from beneath the dark sleeve of his jacket. His hand was strong, his fingers long and sensitive with a smattering of black hair across his knuckles.

She swallowed and glanced up, her heart splitting in two. “Pet-e-r.”

His raised eyebrow spoke volumes.

“What are you doing here?” She held the tray between them like a defense, gripping it so tight her fingers hurt. Her stomach lurched; air whooshed from her lips and every fiber of her being buzzed with life on seeing him again. But with that came a profound sadness.

She turned away from his penetrating blue gaze. His relentless pursuit of his profession had nearly destroyed her and their marriage. She couldn’t go back to him. Wouldn’t.

Not unless he was willing to change… give her what she wanted, what she… they… deserved… a real marriage. Tears stung her eyelids, and she gulped them down with her next breath.

A melody drifted to her, a balm to her frazzled emotions.

She’d been stagnating, except in the bedroom. And she wanted to be

more to him than a bedroom playmate. In a desperate attempt to reclaim her

life, and save her marriage, she had made a rash decision and fled.

She was playing a risky card, especially since he controlled the deck.

Could she pull it off? Would he ever see her as more than a possession?

“Better question is” –he dropped a chipped martini glass on her tray,

shattering her thoughts— “what’re you doing here, Ellie?”

Promised Lies #BlogTour @msashton_writer @EndeavourPress #CharacterSpotlight @emmamitchellfpr

Promised Lies BT Banner

Many thanks to Emma Mitchell for the opportunity to take part.

Character Spotlight…..

Lily Blanchette is a complex creation. She is a second-generation detective whose sister was murdered six months ago. She is getting her first case as lead detective and the similarity to her sister’s death is disturbing. She recently married a local newspaper reporter, trying to escape her overbearing mother’s influence and the tensions between her mother and father. She is of mixed race in a predominantly white community, where her white father has been a long-time detective. Her marriage is also a rebound from a co-worker, with whom she had a long-term relationship.

Did you write the book to accommodate Lily or Lily to accommodate the book?

Initially, I craft a storyline that Lily has to react to. During the editing and rewrites I add scenes that bring out the best and worst in my characters.

What do you like most about her?

I like that Lily has an ability to think outside of the rules and test her leadership to find the guilty party, while setting aside strife in her personal life.

What do you like least about her?

She left her dog, Max behind with her ex. She gave that up for her husband who was jealous of the previous relationship and doesn’t like animals. To try to appease her husband she gives up a part of herself, normally this is ok, but you need to read the book to know why this was such a poor choice.

Did your early readers/editorial team like her to start with or did you have to change her in any way?

Readers identified with Lily, but they wanted more depth, more connection to her and how she came to this situation. So, I went back into the story brought out her father’s character, who is the major influence in Lily’s life and career. My writing mentor wanted more emotion and drama to show Lily’s inner struggles, so I created additional scenes to bring the reader deeper into Lily’s life.

Do they have any similarities with anyone real? Who? What? Why?

This is a bit of a secret, Lily is my alter ego…She reflects a part of my life that I wanted to pursue, but my life changed in wonderful ways that re-directed me to be a stay at home mom this time, and really enhance my writing career.

What are your plans for them?

Lily has huge changes and challenges in her life in the next two books. Book two in the series Her Final Watch is due out in late 2017. Promised Lies sets in motion events that help readers get in touch with Lily and her family. It reveals connections that also continue on in the next two books, and even spawns two side stores that I’m also working on.

Would you be friends in real life?

Yes, she is a part of me, but because of our similarities we would probably butt heads because Lily is more hard-headed than I am.

Many thanks to Marguerite for introducing us to Lily.

Promised Lies cover

Detective Lily Blanchette has a lot on her plate. Her sister, Celine, was murdered, her parents are on the verge of divorce, and after a whirlwind romance, she married a man she barely knows.

When the bodies of two young women are found, it is clear that the killer is the same person who murdered her sister, Lily sets out to find out who that is.

As the investigation comes to life, Lily realises that all is not as it seems in her life, who can she actually trust and who is she?

Many thanks to Sarah Hardy, at Bloodhound Books, for the opportunity to take part.

My review…..

The Eyes Of The Accused is book 2 in the Ben Whittle Investigation series and, in my opinion, is even better than the first, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Revelation Room too! (You can find my review HERE) The series has recently been re-launched by Bloodhound books and you really should check them out if you love a good psychological thriller.

I would recommend reading the series in order.

This is quite a difficult book to review without spoiling book 1 for those who haven’t read it yet, but I have thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Ben Whittle again. He’s taken on more responsibility at Whittle Investigations after the trauma of their previous case in The Revelation Room. Maddie is now working with him and they are hired to search for Hannah, a pregnant girl who hasn’t been seen since leaving work. The investigation leads to Maddie being bait to try to gain information from a suspect. Nothing could prepare her for what she was about to discover and for the danger she soon finds herself in. Will Ben figure things out before it’s too late though? The truth is nothing short of shocking and part of the back story is just heartbreaking.

There are a couple of very disturbing characters in this book. Mark Tilbury certainly knows how to write them. They are as fascinating as they are terrifying!

Ben is a very likeable character and his self-confidence has improved slightly due to his experiences. He’s very sweet with Maddie.

There are twists and turns galore. The short chapters add to the tension, keeping it a fast-paced read. I was on the edge of my seat and almost held my breath towards the end. It is quite amusing at times though. Brilliant! Can’t wait for book 3!

Many thanks to Sarah Hardy, at Bloodhound Books, for my ARC and for inviting me to be a part of the blog tour.

EYES OF THE ACCUSED 2

Fresh from the horrors of their last case, private investigators Ben and Maddie are plunged into a disturbing world of terror as they search for missing pregnant girl, Hannah Heath.

Drawn to Frank Crowley, a suspect in Hannah’s disappearance, Maddie is about to come face to face with true evil. As she gets close to Crowley, Maddie will learn all is not what it seems.

Crowley is just a small part of something much larger. Something so terrible and deranged, it defies reason.

When Maddie disappears, Ben is left in a desperate race against time to find her and uncover the truth.

But can Ben and Maddie both survive this time?

Watch this space for a guest post from Paul Mathews, on 22nd June, as part of his blog tour!

About the author…..

Paul Mathews is a 40-something British guy who’s given up his 9-to-5 job in London to become a full-time comedy novelist. Why did he make this bold step? Well, he’d had enough of crazy managers and uncooperative printers. So one afternoon, after nearly 20 years working at the heart of the British Government, he shut down his computer, deleted all his emails and escaped the office – never to return. (Okay, it wasn’t quite as dramatic as that, but he is a fiction writer, so please cut him a little slack.)

His two decades working as a Government press officer gave him an invaluable insight into all the key elements of modern government: bureaucracy, bungling, buffoonery, buck-passing and other things that don’t begin with the letter ‘b’ – such as politicians with huge egos and very little talent. He’s now putting that knowledge to use by writing about a British Government of the future – where, believe it or not, the politicians are even bigger idiots than the current lot.

Before becoming a PR guy, he was an accountant. But he doesn’t like to talk about that. And going back further, he went to Cambridge University and studied philosophy. Despite thousands of hours of thoughtful contemplation, he still hasn’t worked out how that happened. The highlight of his university years was receiving a £300 travel grant to visit Prague and ‘study philosophy’. It was a trip which ignited his love of Eastern Europe where he spends a lot of time writing and drinking black beer.

Other interests include wearing sunglasses and having his photograph taken. Visit his website for more info on this (allegedly) humorous man: http://www.iamthe.website
