Beautiful Broken Things by Sara Barnard @saramegan @panmacmillan #BookReview @NetGalley

Beautiful Broken Things by [Barnard, Sara]

Publisher: Macmillan Children’s Books; Main Market Ed. edition (11th February 2016)

My review

We meet Caddy who, in her own eyes is very ordinary. Too ordinary! Living in a nice house with a Dad who is a Doctor and a Mum who works with the Samaritans. She goes to a private all girls school, which she knows costs a fortune, and she wants for nothing. Other than a more interesting life.

As she turns 16 she vows that this will be the year she will find a proper boyfriend, lose her virginity and experience a “Significant Life Event”. She shares this goal with her best friend, Rosie. She has been best friends with Rosie for years and they are still the best of friends, despite attending different high schools. They tell each other everything and spend all of their spare time together. That is until Suzanne comes along. Suzanne attends Rosie’s school and they become close, much to Caddy’s annoyance. She’s not used to sharing her best friend. However, over time, she too becomes close to Suzanne. Suzanne is exciting. She seems to not care about school or anything really. For Caddy, Suzanne is exactly what she needs to bring her out of her shell. However, Suzanne has a painful past and one she’s likely to never get over. She obviously needs more help than she is receiving and I felt so sorry for her, despite her destructive behaviour.

As a parent, I could totally sympathise with Caddy’s parents. What parent would want their 16 year old daughter sneaking out in the middle of the night? We don’t want our well behaved children being led astray by so called bad influences. Their reaction to things that go on throughout the story was very believable for me. As much as I respect my children’s right to choose their own friends, I would certainly have something to say if their behaviour put them at any risk.

However, this story does highlight just how we never know what someone else might be going through and that their reckless actions can be a cry for help.

It was interesting how the dynamics of the friendship between Caddy, Rosie and Suzanne shifted over such a short time. Rosie soon became the jealous one as Caddy and Suzanne became close, but this jealousy turned to concern as Caddy took more and more risks just to spend time with Suzanne. I felt sorry for Rosie then as feeling left out is awful.

It was hard to guess where the story might lead. My heart was breaking for Suzanne and I truly hoped she would get the support she needed to start building a new, positive life for herself.

I could totally see why Caddy was drawn to Suzanne. At such an impressionable age, a lot of teenagers are trying to fit in and be what they see as interesting. No-one wants to be the boring one.

They’re having a great time until an accident happens during one of their many middle of the night adventures, and their friendship changes forever.

Beautiful Broken Things is so beautifully written, I was drawn in from the very beginning and it didn’t let me go until the very last page. It’s a very powerful story about friendship, family, child abuse and mental illness. It’s aimed at a teenage/YA audience, but honestly, I have thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult. It is most definitely a book that will stay with me and one I will happily recommend.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for approving my request on Netgalley.

Description

I was brave
She was reckless
We were trouble

Best friends Caddy and Rosie are inseparable. Their differences have brought them closer, but as she turns sixteen Caddy begins to wish she could be a bit more like Rosie – confident, funny and interesting. Then Suzanne comes into their lives: beautiful, damaged, exciting and mysterious, and things get a whole lot more complicated. As Suzanne’s past is revealed and her present begins to unravel, Caddy begins to see how much fun a little trouble can be. But the course of both friendship and recovery is rougher than either girl realizes, and Caddy is about to learn that downward spirals have a momentum of their own.

About the author

Sara lives in Brighton and does all her best writing on trains. She loves books, book people and book things. She has been writing ever since she was too small to reach the “on” switch on the family Amstrad computer. She gets her love of words from her dad, who made sure she always had books to read and introduced her to the wonders of secondhand book shops at a young age.

Sara is trying to visit every country in Europe, and has managed to reach 13 with her best friend. She has also lived in Canada and worked in India.

Sara is inspired by what-ifs and people. She thinks sad books are good for the soul and happy books lift the heart. She hopes to write lots of books that do both. BEAUTIFUL BROKEN THINGS is her first book and a dream come true.

A short story by Jelena Borojevic

A beautifully written short story…..

Fictionophile's avatarFictionophile

Today while perusing a few of the blogs that I follow, I came across a remarkable little story.  It was written by Jelena Borojevic, who is a Goodreads author and the Assistant Fiction Editor of Arcadia Press.

I had meant to just skim a few paragraphs, but the story grabbed me and I read every word.  It reminded me a little of a novel I read recently called “Soft in the head“.  It also reminded me a bit of the writings of one of my favorite authors, Fredrik Backman.old-man-on-bench

The story, about an elderly man who visits a park daily to feed the pigeons, is well-written and has themes of loneliness, friendship, and human ‘connection’.  I urge you to read it in it’s entirety. The title of this charming little story is:

The Letter O

Enjoy!  I’m sure that she would love to…

Brake Failure by Alison Brodie @alisonbrodie2 #BookReview #AuthorInterview #Excerpt

brakefailurecoverwithreview

Publisher: Clipboard Press (9th January 2017)

My review

Brake Failure is the first of Alison Brodie’s books I have read, but it most certainly won’t be my last! I have thoroughly enjoyed Ruby’s story.

The whole book spans the few weeks on the run up to (where most people are stressing about what might happen when the clock strikes midnight) and including New Years Eve 1999. It starts just before midnight on 31st December 1999. Sheriff Hank Gephart has been shot and it seems the shooter might be someone called Ruby. The story then switches to 16 weeks earlier when we first meet Ruby. There is no way on earth this woman would shoot anyone!

It’s obvious quite early on that Ruby has spent her whole life trying to please others (mainly her Step-mother) and competing with her Step-Sister, Claire. Ruby and Claire are chalk and cheese and whilst Claire isn’t a likeable character, she is a fascinating one. I liked Ruby from the start. She’s an insecure character, but finally feels like she has made her mother proud as she marries the respectable Edward. His job should soon take them to live in Paris which delights her, if for no other reason than to make Claire jealous. However, when the plans change she finds herself living in Kansas, miles away from her family and knowing no-one. Ruby is a very reserved character to start with, but she soon starts to come out of her shell when she becomes bored with her lonely life. She doesn’t seem at all committed to Edward and her head is easily turned by other handsome men. One of which she can’t get out of her head, however hard she tries.

Ruby’s story is quite sad in one way. Given her upbringing it’s no wonder she is how she is. It is a very funny story though. I found myself chuckling away quite often throughout, especially during the scenes where Ruby is with her new friends, being very English, but trying her best not to be! Ruby reminds me of that one friend who is hilarious without actually trying to be. I LOVED her diary entries!

The way her story is written is very clever. As the truth about the opening chapter was gradually revealed, I was well and truly gripped. I was quite surprised by it, but I loved the ending! Brilliant!

I’m off to add all of Alison’s other books to my TBR list now 🙂

Many thanks to Alison for my Kindle copy of Brake Failure. I will happily recommend!

Q&A with Alison Brodie

alison-brodie

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I am Scottish and I write romance with suspense, drama and humour.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

They just come to me. Out of the blue. A character nudges into my brain and won’t leave me alone.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

No.

How do you pick your characters names?

Name Your Baby Book. (The main protagonist comes into my head with her own name).

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

I NEVER seek out a story. I let it come to me. I will see or hear something in my head and I will jot down notes. If the story is meant to be told, it will keep coming back. I keep jotting down notes until, finally, I have the most overwhelming urge to write it all out.

I grab a pen and pad and write and write, without stopping, without looking back. Then I type out what looks like Japanese, and put the mss away in a drawer for at least six weeks. When I take it out, I can read it through a stranger’s eyes and see immediately what needs to be removed, or embellished.

This is when the hard works starts: editing and editing – like polishing a sculpture to smooth the edges. Writing effortless reading takes hard work.

Do you have a favourite author?

Tawni O’Dell. Back Roads, Fragile Beasts (I wasn’t keen on her others)

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

J. D. Salinger. I would ask why he gave up writing and disappeared from public view. His short stories are the best. Why didn’t he do more of them? Was he startled by the sudden fame of Catcher in the Rye; did he believe it didn’t deserve that extreme praise; did he get Second Book Syndrome and fear that whatever special ingredient was in Catcher, he couldn’t replicate?

Were you a big reader as a child?

No. Since being a child, though, I have read every genre, and a lot of classics. I have read and enjoyed writers such as T.C. Boyle, Ian McEwan and Tawni O’Dell. I have enjoyed books such as: “Adrian Mole”, “Le Grand Meaulnes,” and “Love Story”.

When did you start to write?

When I started to write. About the age of 5 or 6.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

Back Roads. I wanted a happy ending, especially for the main protagonist, Harley Altmyer.

What are you working on right now?

I am promoting BRAKE FAILURE. Then in mid-January I will give a final edit to a book called, ZENKA, which is set in the 80’s London gangland and tells of a Bulgarian girl who escapes from sex traders. The book is a rom com – I know it doesn’t sound like it!

When can we look forward to a new release?

ZENKA will be released: 1 September, 2017

brake-failure-teaser

Description

Brake Failure is a contemporary romance with humour, suspense and a kick-ass heroine.  The story is set in one of the most fascinating periods of America’s history:  the months leading up to Y2K “melt-down.”

“Is it too late to tell him you love him when you’re looking down the barrel of his gun?”

Ruby Mortimer-Smyth is an English debutante, destined for Ladies Day at Ascot and taking tea at The Savoy. She knows the etiquette for every occasion and her soufflés NEVER collapse.

She is in control of her life, tightly in control.  Until fate dumps her down in … Kansas.

Ruby believes that life is like a car; common-sense keeps it on the road, passion sends it into a ditch.  What she doesn’t know is, she’s on a collision course with Sheriff Hank Gephart.

Sheriff Hank Gephart can judge a person.  Miss Mortimer-Smyth might act like the Duchess of England but just under the surface there’s something bubbling, ready to explode.  She’s reckless, and she’s heading for brake failure.  And he’s not thinking about her car.

With the Millennium approaching, Ruby gets caught up in the Y2K hysteria.  She joins a group of Survivalists, who give her a gun and advise her to stockpile basic essentials, such as gasoline and water-purifying tablets.  So she bulk-buys Perrier, Gentleman’s Relish and macaroons.

Ruby, far from home, is making Unsuitable Friends and “finding herself” for the first time.  She falls in with a gang of Hells Angels and falls foul of the law.  At every turn, she comes up hard against Sheriff Hank Gephart, whose blue eyes seem to look deep into her soul.  She desperately wants him but knows she can never have him.

She’s angry and confused at the emotions he arouses in her.  Pushed to her limit, she bursts from her emotional straightjacket.

As the clock strikes midnight of the new Millennium, she’s on a freight train with three million dollars, a bottle of Wild Turkey and a smoking gun.

What happened to Miss Prim-and-Proper?   And why did she shoot Mr Right?

______

Note:  Alison Brodie wrote this story from first-hand experience.  She lived in Kansas during this time and was stunned by the hysteria, unnerved that the US government was spending $150 billion preparing for Armageddon.  As Lionel Shriver says in her novel, We Have To Talk About Kevin:  “1999, a year widely mooted beforehand as the end of the world.”

Excerpt 5 – Brake Failure

Ruby!’ Karla shouted. ‘Git yer ass over here, gal.’

She wandered over, aware that he was more stoned than usual. He grabbed her hand and tugged. ‘Come on, Ruby-Ruby; tell us more about the Tower of London.’

She was not at all alarmed by his manner. Although he was built like King Kong, he was a pussy-cat. But she was in no mood for talking. ‘Nah, I’m going back inside,’ she said, making a half-hearted attempt to disengage herself.

GET YER HANDS OFF HER!’ The voice cut through the night air.

Gephart was striding towards them, his face murderous.

Karla was on his feet, hands bunched: ‘You talking to me?’ he growled, unaware that he was threatening a cop out of uniform.

Yeah, I’m talking to you.’

Karla stepped forward, chin thrust out. ‘What I do with her ain’t none of yer business!’

It’s alright!’ Ruby cried, grabbing Gephart’s sleeve to restrain his threatening punch. This was a mistake. With his arm held back, Gephart was unable to defend himself and took the full force of Karla’s fist in his face. Gephart let out a yell and fell back clutching his nose.

Ruby spun to Karla. ‘You idiot! Why on earth did you do that?’

Karla, startled by her verbal attack, didn’t see Hank’s fist coming. It cracked against his jaw, sending him reeling back.

Appalled, she turned angrily to see Hank going in for another punch. ‘STOP IT!’ She jumped between them and held out her hands. ‘THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!’ Goodness, she sounded like the Queen.

It worked, though. The combatants stared at her with a “what-the-hell-was-that” look.

Karla’s girlfriend arrived on the scene, wobbling on spiked heels and screeching. Everyone was making a fuss over Karla, yet no-one cared about Hank, who was bent over, cupping a hand under his bleeding nose. Ruby’s fury turned to pity. She picked up his Stetson.

Come on,’ she said, putting a hand on his back. ‘Let’s go inside and I’ll clean you up.’ She steered him towards the entrance, along the corridor and into the ladies lavatory. ‘You shouldn’t have hit him,’ she said, sitting him on a stool by the sink and taking the tube of Savlon from her bag. Apart from a pair of tweezers, the rest of her emergency medical supplies had long ago been abandoned to make space for makeup and perfume.

You were in trouble.’

She began filling the sink with hot water. ‘I wasn’t in trouble.’ Gephart was so close; she could feel the power of him.

Didn’t look that way to me.’

Karla’s my friend. He was just being silly.’ She yanked paper towels from the dispenser, soaked them in water, squeezed them out and began to wipe the blood from Hank’s face. He was staring at her but she refused to meet his gaze. Being so close, she could smell him, the beer on his breath, the smoky smell of hickory wood from his hair, the warm scent of male sweat; musty yet inoffensive. She could see the kink in his noise where it had broken, the crows’ feet at the corner of his eyes.

In the dance hall, the band finished their song with a rousing roll of drums. The roar of chattering voices filled the sudden silence. It was the interval. Females began filing in to the lavatory and, seeing Gephart, rushed forward, squeaking their sympathy. ‘Hank, sweetheart, does it hurt?’ ‘Can I help?’

When a hand reached out to touch his cheek, Ruby slapped it away. She was appalled at this base action. She quickly collected herself: ‘Ladies, please!’ That voice again. ‘We need space.’ Throwing her cautious looks, the females backed off.

Why had she slapped that girl? Shame-faced, Ruby soaked another fistful of paper and began cleaning the side of Gephart’s nose. All around was the sound of flushing loos, the spray of perfume, the click of lipsticks. Then the room went silent as everyone left. From the dance hall came the plaintive sound of a woman singing:

Let me ride through the wide open country that I love. Don’t fence me in. Let me be by myself in the evening breeze, listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees, send me off for ever but I ask you please, don’t fence me in …’

When Hank spoke again, his tone was low, dejected. ‘What happened to you at Shady Acres? I was waiting with a bunch of flowers to say thank you.’

She felt a twinge of guilt. He’d bought her flowers. ‘I’m sorry, Hank. I must have gone out the wrong door.’

You were running from me again, weren’t you?’

Her glance flickered over his blue eyes and quickly away.

Was it because I called you Sweet Cheeks?’

She was silent for a moment then a tiny laugh escaped. ‘Possibly.’

He stared at her. ‘You’re the most beautiful woman I ever did see.’

Ruby knew from the heat in her cheeks that her face had turned the fiercest red. She was panicking, unable to cope with these feelings.

How kind,’ she said coolly, trying to re-assert control of her emotions.

She sounded like Claire. Good. Now she had to be Claire.

I want you to know I’m more’n just a cop.’ He flexed his right hand – his punching hand – and grimaced. ‘I’m a bull-rider. I’ve won the bull-riders’ championship at Flint Hills Rodeo three years straight, and no-one west of State Line can rope a steer as good as me.’

Evidently, you are not a man who sits at home in a smoking jacket listening to Schubert.’ She was using biting sarcasm as a defence and was surprised when he chuckled.

Sure don’t sound like me.’ He shifted. ‘I’m building my own house out in Abilene with a veranda looking west to the sunset. And a picket fence that goes all around. Out in the yard there’s a live oak some say was used by Sherman’s scouts.’ He paused. ‘Come out with me Ruby. No strings. Just you and me. Bottle of wine. Steamboat on the Missouri. Moonlight. Then we can talk, start over. What do you say?’

It sounded appealing, and very romantic. All the pieces fitted perfectly, except one:

Him.

It would be like wanting a cuddly cat and being given a tiger. He was too masculine, too overpowering, too much in charge. If she wanted to rock the security of her little world by going off with another man, she would choose Payat. Payat with his gentle manner, his shy dark eyes and, of course, his wildly romantic appeal.

But she wasn’t prepared to go off with another man. Like a filing cabinet, her life was compartmentalised and ordered. Edward was her husband. Payat was a delicious fantasy. And Gephart was the rogue piece of paper that had to go in the bin.

It was time to tell him she was married.

I’m mar-’ She stopped and thought: This man is a cop, a control freak. What if he has the old-fashioned notion that this little lady should be at home with hubbie and not in some seedy bar mixing with drug-fuelled Hells Angels? What if, in a fit of pique, he tells Edward? Then I’m in big trouble and all “shore leave” will be revoked – permanently.

Hank sighed. ‘Sometimes I get the feeling you don’t like me.’

Possibly.’

He grabbed her wrist. Astonished, she found herself staring him straight in the eyes. ‘No, you don’t dislike me, Ruby,’ he whispered. ‘In fact, I bet if I asked nicely, you’d give me a kiss.’

She had the sensation of standing on railroad tracks and feeling, or imagining, the far-off trembling of something large racing her way. And yet she was powerless to move away as much as a step.

Go on, Ruby, I’ve been injured in the line of duty. Give me a kiss.’

No.’ His hand felt like a steel band around her wrist.

I saved your hide.’ Although his tone was cheeky, his eyes pleaded.

Then will you to let me go?’

I promise.’

Alright,’ she conceded, telling herself that for right or wrong, he was now sitting here because he’d believed she’d needed rescuing. She lowered her head, touched her lips to his cheek and jerked back.

His face was stamped with indignation. ‘What the hell was that?’ he thundered.

A kiss.’

I meant on the lips.’

She stared down at his mouth. A voice in her head told her to do it, another voice told her to run like hell. But she couldn’t run; not with him holding her. She bent and quickly pecked him on the lips. ‘There! That’s a kiss.’

Where I come from lady that was no kiss.’

He stood up abruptly. She sensed what was about to happen and felt the flutter of giant wings open inside her chest. But before she could step away, he pulled her against him, one hand coming around her to hold her arms, the other gripping the back of her head. She was immobilised, unable to turn from his advancing kiss. He lowered his head and slowly brushed his mouth across hers; she could feel his breath coming into her. She felt a dart of hot desire shoot up from between her legs. Then his mouth was on hers, pressing down…

A cheer of female voices and male wolf-whistles erupted from the doorway. Hearing it, Hank lifted his head to his audience, his arms loosening their hold on her. ‘Now that’s a kiss!’ he smirked.

Humiliated, she slapped him across the cheek and strode for the door. Laughter broke over her head like a wave. She shouldered her way through a jubilant crowd of heavily perfumed females and grinning cowboys. The bastard had got a laugh at her expense!

A man shouted out. ‘Hey, Hank, I got a notion she don’t like you!’

Another man agreed. ‘You ain’t gonna be herdin’ that pretty heifer into yer corral any time soon.’

In the babble of voices she heard: ‘… got yerself a maverick.’ ‘… Roxanne.’

It wasn’t until she was outside that she realised she was crying.

Blood Moon by [Bethel, John David] (e-book from John David Bethel)

Publisher: Tell-Tale Publishing Group, LLC (4th December 2016)

On a hot, steamy afternoon in Miami, Cuban-American businessman Recidio Suarez is brutally beaten and abducted. Handcuffed, shackled and blindfolded, he has no idea why he has been targeted. What he discovers is heart-stopping. What he endures during almost a month of captivity compares only to the most horrendous stories of prisoners of war. He is tortured, and under the threat of death, and worse – the rape of his wife and torture of his children – Suarez is forced to hand over his multi-million dollar holdings to his captors.

Suarez survives and then spends the next few months staying one step ahead of the murderous pack. During this time, he and his lawyer, Nolan Stevens – a former Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Office of the FBI – are having difficulties convincing the Miami-Dade Police Department that a crime has been committed. Their efforts are complicated by Steven’s difficult history with the head of the MDPD Special Investigations Division, who is not interested in pursuing the case.

Coco Pinchard's Must-Have Toy Story: A sparkling feel-good Christmas comedy! (Coco Pinchard Series Book 5) by [Bryndza, Robert] (Kindle)

A sparkling feel-good Christmas comedy, which asks the question – how far would you go to get your child the must-have Christmas toy?

It’s December 1992, and children are going crazy for the Tracy Island toy – almost as crazy as the parents! Christmas day is fast approaching and Coco Pinchard is desperately trying to track one down for her four-year-old son Rosencrantz.

Throw into the mix a horrible boss, a lazy husband, and the prospect of her in-laws arriving for the festivities, and Coco wishes she could cancel Christmas and sail off to a desert island somewhere – preferably with the gorgeous-yet-unattainable Tom from work.

But retail therapy is at hand! Coco’s faithful friends Chris and Marika rally round, and even her mother-in-law Ethel tries to help in her own eccentric way.

From dodgy dealings in a motorway lay-by, to extreme shopping in Hamley’s with a Sylvanian Families fanatic, to having a go at the Blue Peter make-your-own Tracy Island, Coco tries everything in the hope that Rosencrantz will open his must-have toy on Christmas morning.

Three Men and a Maybe: (Free Romance Short Story) by [Lovell, Katey] (Kindle freebie)

A free short story…the perfect treat for yourself this Christmas

‘A joyful, funny, feel-good story, packed with showtunes, romance and a wonderfully warm cast’ – Sunday Times Bestselling author, Miranda Dickinson on The Singalong Society for Singletons

It’s the age-old saying. You wait all day for a bus, and then three come along at once. But proposals? That’s just ridiculous. And yet, on New Year’s Eve, as the countdown finishes and the whole pub erupts in celebrations, Cerys finds herself staring at her ex-fiancé, Ricky. Who just so happens to be kneeling on the floor, ring in hand, asking her to marry him. Again.

And if that weren’t enough, hot barman Angelo, and longtime friend Huw also decide to pop the question. At the exact same time.

Three men, two real contenders, but just one choice. What on earth will she do?

All I Want For Christmas by [Willis, Susan] (Kindle)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…. or is it?

Tom Shepherd has been made redundant.

While his wife Anne works all hours trying and make up for the lost income, he hangs around the market, in Newcastle.

But everything changes when he meets Ellie Ferguson, a beautiful girl much younger than Tom.

Ellie is an aspiring writer, and convinces Tom that he should take a writing course.

Tom is grateful for his newfound passion and spends his days writing and editing with Ellie.

But there’s no denying the physical attraction between the two and it would seem that neither of them can resist.

Tom continues to balance his home life with Anne and his torrid affair with Ellie. Christmas has come early for Tom – he loves writing, loves his wife, and loves his exciting, physical relationship with Ellie.

But Ellie starts to suspect Tom is not all that he seems, when she asks him about joining her for Christmas Day.

Caught in a web of his own lies, he desperately tries to hang on to his double life.

But when Anne starts taking a closer look at Tom’s writing assignments, she finds endless notes from Ellie and her worst fear is realised.

Tom’s last assignment asks him to write his autobiography. But this means reliving a past he has been running from for years.
But in telling the truth about his past, will he be able to save his future?

All I Want For Christmas is a story of love, lust, betrayal and forgiveness, all set against the magical backdrop of Christmas.

Q&A

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I’m originally from Indiana but I have lived in the Atlanta area for the past forty-some years. I’ve worked at newspapers, owned a small printing shop, and up until a few years ago, I was a cafeteria manager at an elementary school. Now I work at home, writing books. I also teach exercise classes to senior citizens three days a week.

My first novel H10N1 was published in 2011. It’s about a flu pandemic that doesn’t get stopped, so there are lots of dead people. Two of the survivors, a man and a woman, are thrown together by a common goal: finding a safe place away from the looters and marauders. Unfortunately, they don’t get along.

Book number two was The Ups and Downs of Being Dead. A 57 year-old man is told he is dying but he can’t accept this death sentence. He’s heard about cryonics and decides to have his body ‘frozen’ until science can find a cure and bring him back to life. He thinks he’ll go to sleep and wake up in the future but he soon discovers his soul is very much awake. Not only that, he’s able to come and go as he pleases.

I moved away from Speculative Fiction for my third novel, Losing It All. This mainstream drama tells the story of a homeless Vietnam vet in the 1980s who has been living on the streets since he came back from the war. When he meets a homeless woman who has two small children, he is compelled to forget his own problems and help her. (This book has been very popular with book clubs.)

The call of the future brought me back to Speculative Fiction for book number four, Habits Kick Back, where a college co-ed decides she’s tired of taking all of the pills to help her concentrate in class, to retain what she has learned, to keep her weight under control, and to suppress her sexuality. Once she kicks the supplements, she finds that hamburgers and French fries are delicious, and the guy who has been a good friend is also super sexy.

Still in the Speculative Fiction genre, I wrote A Tale of Moral Corruption that takes place in the future when women are in control of both the corporate and political world. Men are the clerks and assistants. The main character, Mason, can’t wait to get married and wear one of the popular artificial wombs that men have strapped to their bellies, carrying their unborn babies. Unfortunately, his plans go terribly awry.

Where do you get your ideas?

Sometimes it’s something or someone I see. Other times, it’s a news story about the latest technology. I never know what cockamamie idea will pop into my head.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Sure. A lot of my characters have mannerisms or speech patterns that I recognize in friends or even myself. And of course, most of the sick humor comes from me.

How do you pick your characters names?

I try hard to make names readable, and short. There’s nothing worse than reading a book with a character named Jehosephat that makes you stop and sound it out every time you see it.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Well, let’s see. First I make a pot of green tea, then sit at my computer and read my emails, any messages on Facebook, and notifications on Twitter. Then I open my document, read what I wrote yesterday, and go back to the kitchen for something to eat. I talk to my cats, I grab a broom and sweep off the front porch, clean the litter box, take another look at what I’ve written, then wander out to the deck to see if any of my plants need watering.

(I have given serious thought to having a seat belt installed on my desk chair!)

With all of my procrastination, I still manage to get one novel a year written.

Do you have a favourite author?

Not really. Sometimes I read big-named authors. Other times I enjoy reading an author’s first novel. I read both traditional authors and self-published. If the story grabs me, I’m happy.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I guess I’d like to meet Stephen King and I’d ask him to plug my books.

Were you a big reader as a child?

Oh, sure. One of the most unfortunate results of reading so much was that I read In Cold Blood as a young teen. I was scared to death for several years that someone was going to come and kill my family.

When did you start to write?

I’ve always enjoyed telling stories, but I didn’t seriously try to write a book until I was married and staying at home with babies. I thought I’d have plenty of time to write. Ha!!

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I’d change Yertle the Turtle. It would be a sneeze instead of a burp.

Just kidding. There are always books that don’t end the way I would like. Sometimes I just change the ending in my head. Or a book that has an open ending is fun because I get to end it the way I want. But I can’t criticize an author for an ending. It’s the way they envisioned the book.

I’ve often wanted to tell people who leave unsatisfactory reviews because they didn’t like the ending: ‘Next time, write your own book.’

What are you working on right now?

I’m back to mainstream fiction, although this time it’s a comedy/mystery called Up To No Good. My character is a neighborhood busybody. (Her husband even calls her Gladys after the nosy neighbor in the TV show Bewitched.) She thinks a house in her neighborhood is being used to video porn movies because she never sees any signs of life: no hose in the yard, no garbage cans at the curb. Needless to say, she gets into a lot of hot water because she can’t mind her own business.

Do you have a new release due?

I was all set to release the book on December 10. Then I received the great news that my book was accepted into the Kindle Scout program with Kindle Press. Interesting note here: The book was originally called Gladys and the Porn House. The publishers love the story but they weren’t too hot on using Porn in the title. (Evidently, if you google the title you get hits of people getting nasty!)

I agreed to change the title to Up To No Good. I definitely didn’t want my book pigeon-holed with erotica exclusively. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) So now I have a new publisher and a new book.

The new release date is December 31, 2016. How’s that for getting it in just under the wire?
