I have the pleasure of welcoming Gita V Reddy to Chat About Books today 🙂

Gita Reddy

(Photo via Amazon.co.uk)

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I live in India. I’ve been married for thirty years and have a grownup son. I worked as a bank official for twenty-six years before taking early retirement in 2011. My first book was published in 2013 by a publisher. Around that time I discovered the ease and the freedom of indie publishing and plunged right in. Today I have more than twenty books in different genres. I also write under the pseudonym, Heera Datta.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

An idea may come from anywhere. Outside the Magic Circle is the result of an article I read. It was about Charles Dickens forcing a separation on his wife after twenty-one years of marriage and ten children. My Middle Grade novel, Tara and the Giant Queen, grew out of a short story I made up for my nephew. Hunt for the Horseman appeared as a flash out of nowhere.

How do you pick your characters names?

Naming my characters is very important for me. Many of my books are set in India. India is a vast country and each region has its own culture. My character names reflect their ethnicity and it helps in fleshing out the characters.

Genre also plays a role. I have to be extra careful while writing historical fiction. For children’s books, I go for easy-to- remember names.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

After getting a story idea,

Step 1: Brief outline

Step 2: Research

Steep3: Character Sketches

Step 4: Writing

Step 5-10: EDITING.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

(Not in order of preference)

Agatha Christie, P. G. Wodehouse, Thomas Hardy, Munshi Prem Chand, Pearl S.Buck.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

Margaret Mitchell. I read somewhere she wrote the last chapter of Gone with the Wind first and other chapters randomly. I would like to hear more about that.

Were you a big reader as a child?

I read beyond my age. It didn’t matter if I didn’t understand some of it!

When did you start to write?

I used to write for the school house magazine, and also take part in creative writing competitions. I also made up impromptu stories for younger cousins. Later, as a mother, I created stories for my son. Because he was a stickler for accuracy and wanted each retelling to be exactly the same, I started writing them down.

Twelve years later I quit my job for full time writing.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I first read Gone with the Wind when I was fifteen. I wasn’t interested in the Civil War or its related social issues. It was an epic love story and I was very disappointed that it hadn’t ended happily.

I would love to change that and go back in time and read it with the revised ending.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

Jungle Book.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

The Write Thing to Do.

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

Miss Marple, and it would be for a cup of tea at home. You see, I suspect there’s something going on in the house across mine.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on two books. A collection of short stories set in India, to follow my earlier books, A Tapestry of Tears and The Vigil and Other Stories. The second is a novel for middle graders. I’m also toying with a plot around Madame de Florian’s Abandoned Apartment but I want it to be historical and not speculative.

Tell us about your last release?

Set in the early nineteenth century, A Tapestry of Tears is about female infanticide, and the unmaking of tradition. If a woman gives birth to a female child, she must feed her the noxious sap of the akk plant. That is the tradition, parampara. Veeranwali rebels, and fights to save her offspring.
The other stories span a range of emotions and also bring to life the varied culture and social spectrum of India. Woven into this collection is the past and the present, despair and hope, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Excerpt

But can you imagine what courage it takes to pour those two drops into the mouth of a babe? And the child you have carried yourself, one who is a part of your own body, whose heartbeat was a resonance of your own? Just as a man is not allowed to show fear on a hunt, women are not expected to waver in snuffing out that tiny life. Does a man remember the look in the eyes of a dying deer? Perhaps he does. A woman does not forget the face of the dead child. The child lives on as a phantom, clutching at her heart, and troubling her sleep.”

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

Nothing much. I did celebrate my first book, also the second. Not sure about the third.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

I hope your readers will follow my Amazon Author Page, visit my website www.gitavreddy.com and connect with me on Facebook and Twitter

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

I like dabbling with art related apps. In fact I enjoy it so much that I illustrated two picture books: The Ant Thief, and Hop and Chomp.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Gita 🙂

Thank you for having me on your blog.

Air Guitar and Caviar by @JackieLadbury #BlogTour #AuthorInterview #Giveaway @rararesources

I am delighted to be joining in with Jackie Ladbury’s Air Guitar and Caviar blog tour! 🙂

Air Guitar and Caviar blog tour

Many thanks to Rachel for the opportunity.

Interview with Jackie Ladbury…..

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

I’ve been writing for some time now and toying with different genres until I realised that I was only happy with a story when it had a romance at its heart. As I’d also been scribbling down my musings about pilots and air stewardesses (or cabin staff as I believe they are now called in England – but how unromantic does that sound?) I decided to try and write an airline based novel. About five novels later I wrote Air Guitar and Caviar and just knew it was worthy of showing to the world. It was shortlisted for a Choc Lit competition when it was only 65,000 words and I knew I could turn it into a better novel if I made it longer. A year later the final version was finished and I still love the story and my cover.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

The idea for Air Guitar and Caviar came out of the blue when I spotted a busker eyeing up a blonde haired, pretty Ryanair stewardess as she wiggled along the road in her sky-blue uniform, pulling her wheelie bag behind her. It seemed a good premise for a story: how would this down-and-out busker manage to bag himself the girl? It grew from there really, although I admit I did turn the busker into a handsome, talented guy from a middle-class background in Southwold, and to make the setting more interesting, the ‘hostie’ worked for a private airline. (It just gave me more freedom with settings and situations.)

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Yes, in a collective kind of way. Lots of traits of my past airline friends and colleagues have morphed into one or two characters. I do have one horrible captain in Air Guitar and Caviar who is not based on any one person – most of the flight deck I worked with were really lovely and respectful.

How do you pick your characters names?

It takes me ages, although Dylan my busker appeared from nowhere and I knew it was perfect for him. I guess you learn to know the character as the novel progresses, so the name you choose initially might become unsuitable half way through it.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Messy – sadly. I don’t seem to have cracked the ability to plot and so my biggest hurdle always seems to be rearranging scenes and chapters once the novel is finished. Nighmare!

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Diana Gabaldan, CJ Archer, Jules Wake, Jane Lovering and a bit of a newcomer to the writing scene Victoria Cornwall. To be honest I read stacks of books, mostly in the dead of night and I forget who wrote them, the minute I finish the story, even if it’s a fantastic novel. Don’t even take in the writer’s name in the first place most of the time. Don’t know why I’m like that but I think it’s to do with the Kindle. (that’s my story anyway!)

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I’d meet Diana Gabaldin and ask her if she’d let me keep Jamie Fraser from Outlander!

Were you a big reader as a child?

Not really. I remember reading all the Enid Blyton books, but struggled to know what to read as I grew older. I was a member of our local library and had a good friend who was an avid reader, so used to just borrow what she told me to!

When did you start to write?

I knew I wanted to write an awful long time before I actually sat down to do it. I remember ‘getting ready to write.’ I had my pen and a pretty exercise book with a hundred blank pages for me to fill – and a glass of wine – all at the ready, and then I thought, hmm, how do I do this? Probably just drank the wine and watched the telly a good few times before I actually started to write anything.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

One Day by David Nicholls. I stopped reading it when it got to ‘That Bit’ (no spoilers) It ruined the book for me, totally.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

One Day – with a better ending.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

‘She tried her best, bless her!’

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

It would have to be Jamie Fraser from Outlander – I just can’t help myself! I’d quite like to sit on the grass with him in Scotland and listen to tales of how life was back in those days.

What are you working on right now?

Oh blimey, my writing schedule is as much of a mess as when I write my individual novels. I have a Christmas novella that might make Amazon by Easter at the rate I’m going, I have another story about a chef and an actress that is 43,00 words in, and am re-reading, hopefully for the last time, my historical romance called The Potters Daughter that is set for release early next year. I have another novel for the Blue Skies series on the boil, set in Africa about diamond smuggling. This one is again set around a private airline with a handsome FBI agent trying not to fall in love with the stewardess who he believes is a baddy!

Do you have a new release due?

Yes. As well as the Potter’s Daughter, I have the second in the Blue Skies series set in the airline industry. After much deliberating, it’s called the Magic of Stars as there is quite a bit of star-gazing in it, although it is, of course, a romance.

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

Cry with relief and trepidation! I keep forgetting about the two bottles of champagne that have been gathering dust under the stairs, but hopefully next time…

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

In case you wondered, I was a stewardess for many years in corporate and commercial airlines, so I kind of know what I’m talking about – up to a point…

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Jackie 🙂

Air Guitar and Caviar cover

Air Guitar and Caviar

Busker Dylan spends his days pulling pints in the local pub and singing on the high street, waiting for fame to call. That suits him fine, until beautiful, but frosty, air stewardess, Scarlett, tosses some coins into his hat but ignores his killer smile and his offer of pizza. He sets out to get the girl, but Scarlett isn’t in the right frame of mind to date anyone, let alone a penniless, if charming, busker boy.

Dylan’s desperate for his big break, but will it bring him the happiness he longs for? And with Scarlett’s past threatening to ruin her future, will Dylan be left to make sweet music all on his own?

Jackie Ladbury

Author Bio –

Jackie Ladbury was desperate to become a journalist when she left school but was ousted within minutes on the day of the exam at her local rag because she’d forgotten to bring a pen.

Short and sharp lesson learned.

Her budding writing career was not on hold for long, though, as Jackie found herself scribbling love stories of pilots and ‘hosties’ while she flew in aeroplanes of various shapes and sizes as a flight attendant herself.

Fast forward a good few years and, after being short-listed in a couple of prestigious romantic writing competitions, Jackie decided it was time to discard her stilettos, say goodbye to the skies and concentrate on writing romantic novels, where the only given is a guaranteed ‘happy ever after.’

#AuthorInterview with Ammar Habib @AmmarAHabib1

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Ammar Habib to Chat About Books 🙂

Ammar Habib

Author bio:

Ammar Habib is a bestselling and award winning author who was born in Lake Jackson, Texas in 1993. Ammar enjoys crafting stories that are not only entertaining, but will also stay with the reader for a long time. Ammar presently resides in his hometown with his family, all of whom are his biggest fans. He draws his inspiration from his family, imagination, and the world around him. Ammar is currently continuing to further his writing career.

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

Sure! First of all, thank you for the invitation to interview with your blog, Kerry. My writing background is that I have several different works published and upcoming, many of which fall under different genres. But as of right now, my main flagship work is my Dark Guardian Series. This is a three part darker vigilante/superhero series. It follows Ethan Daniels as he dons the mask of The Guardian, a vigilante who will soon be feared by the criminals and the corrupt. Reborn through fire, Ethan is armed with advanced skills, an arsenal of weaponry, and vast resources. His sights are focused on one thing, and nothing will stop him. Soon, he will rise from vigilante to hero. And from hero to legend.

My other major work is a historical novel, Memories Of My Future. This piece actually won a national award in May 2017 and has been met with a really warm reception!

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

As far as inspiration goes, I honestly draw inspiration from everywhere. I’ve possessed a huge imagination since I was a child, so that is usually my biggest source. I have a hard time switching my imagination off, which can be a problem when somebody is trying to talk to you and you’re imagining a battle scene in your head! The other place I really draw inspiration is from the world around me. I try to stay observant because sometimes the best inspiration passes by right in front of you!

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Just like Ethan, I’m a vigilante and spend my time beating villains to a pulp (just a little joke there). Honestly, I have found more of myself in Ethan than I originally thought. One of his traits that I personally do possess to a fault is his trait of always being his biggest critic. I find myself often overly-criticizing myself when it comes to several areas of my life, especially my spirituality and writing. I am definitely more of a loner like Ethan is as well, and I think I unconsciously showed that side of myself when writing his character.

There are other parts of Ethan which are nearly the opposite of what I am, such as him being tall, dark, and handsome!

However, there are some supporting characters, especially in Memories Of My Future, that are named after or based off of relatives, such as my grandparents and some of their siblings. One of the nice things about being an author is that you can give characters some traits or names of people you know as a nod of respect to the person.

How do you pick your characters names?

9 out of 10 times, I pick names which have meanings that fit the characters. For example, the name Ethan means “strong” both in a physical and mental sense. Since my protagonist for my Dark Guardian Series is very strong physically and mentally, that was the perfect name for him.

Other times, I’ll either name a character after somebody I know in real life, normally somebody I respect or I’ll pick a name that has a nice ring to it for the story.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

My writing process always begins with a theme. I ask myself, “why should readers read this? What do I hope they get out of it?” As entertaining as I hope my stories are, I want them to hold some sort of moral lesson or theme for the audience as well. At the same time, I don’t want to slap readers in the face with this ‘theme’. Instead, I want to show it in the characters and story arc. So I take a lot of time in figuring out who my character are. As far as pre-writing goes, I probably spend more time fleshing out the characters than I spend on anything else. Many times, putting in the effort to create three dimensional characters is the separator between good and great work.

However, with that said, my writing process is very fluid. I like to try and create an outline before I go into the actual writing. But many times I find myself starting the first draft before I’ve even finished my outline. The inspiration comes in bursts so I try to capitalize on those bursts as much as I can. I find that being too stringent on my writing process can actually become a hindrance.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Honestly, I’m more of a fan of the classics and some of my favourites include Og Mandino, J. R. R. Tolkien, George Orwell, Harper Lee, & Mark Twain.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

This’ll be more of an attempt at humor, but I’d choose William Shakespeare. What I really want to ask him is if he really put all that symbolism and metaphors into his plays that all my English teachers made me write essays about, or if my teachers were just making something out of nothing. And he’s definitely going to have to pick up the tab because I already did my fair share with having to spend hours writing analysis of his plays!
On a more serious note, I’d like to meet Bob Kane, the creator of Batman. I’d like to ask him if all this analysis and interpretation of the character was something he intended. It’d be an interesting conversation for sure!
Were you a big reader as a child?

Yes! I read anything I could get my hands on.

When did you start to write?

I actually started in 2nd grade! The main catalyst for my writing was my 2nd Grade Teacher at AP Beutel, Mrs. Scott. When I was in her class years ago, she gave me a homework assignment to write a one-page story. This was the first time I ever wrote anything. That experience breathed the love of writing into me and I’ve never stopped since!

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

There are honestly too many to mention! But if I had to pick one, I’d say 1984. If memory serves me correct, it ends with the main character, Winston, being brainwashed and breaking down mentally, which leads to him conforming to society. I know George Orwell wrote this ending to wake up readers. However, every time I’ve read the book, I can’t help but wish that Winston had not broken and had instead chosen to die with his freedom.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

If I had to pick one, I’d say The Martian. I think that book is absolutely fascinating from concept to execution and it would have been neat to be a part of that project!

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

When the Dream is Big Enough, The Facts Don’t Count!

What are you working on right now?

I’m not working on anything new at the moment. My agent is working on selling a couple of projects and I have two more in the process of being published during the first half of 2018, so doing the final editing and PR for those is taking up all my time!

Do you have a new release due?

I have a police novel releasing March 2nd, 2018! I also have a children’s picture book releasing late Spring 2018, but I don’t have a hard date for that one yet.

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

There’s honestly not much celebrating on publication day because the to-do list won’t allow it!
The day usually involves me sending out emails all day or making phone calls. But normally my family and I will try to go out to a nice dinner to celebrate!

How can readers keep in touch with you?

I’m very active on social media and respond to all messages and emails. Here are my platforms:

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

For any aspiring authors out there, I would like them to know that I went through over 300 rejections for my first novel before it was ever even fully read by a publisher. So please never let rejection discourage you. If you believe in your story, then own it and stick with it!

I’d like to end by saying thank you again for the interview! I hope your readers enjoy it as much as I enjoyed answering your questions!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Ammar 🙂
