THE DEVIL’S CROWN

PART ONE

Monica James

I was feared.

Respected.

Worshiped.

But all of that changed when the impossible happened—I fell in love. Only those feelings weren’t reciprocated, because who could love a monster like me?

My empire crumbled. People died. I went from being a victorious leader to lurking in the shadows, planning revenge on my half-brother who now reigns in my place.

An orphanage is where I find sanctuary, but when she walks into my world and evokes a yearning I thought long dead, my demons are awakened and want what they can’t have—her. Sooner or later, I knew I’d need to feed the darkness inside me.

Mayhem, power, and control course through my veins. I will use them to regain my crown, my throne, and then claim her, despite what solemn vows she might’ve made.

I will break them…and her.

ICYMI, here are my individual reviews….

Stirred with Love: (The Somerley Series Book 1)

Stirred With Love cover

Such a lovely story!

Lily is mourning the loss of her husband and decides to re-open the café they used to run together, but she won’t be able to do it without some help now she is getting on in years herself. So, she puts out an advert for a manager and an assistant in the hope of finding just the right ones for the job.

Kate is in her 30’s and is struggling with her marriage to Nick. When the prospect of a new job in a new area, with accommodation included, is brought to her attention, she applies and is successful. She’s not sure it will be long term commitment, but it will give her time to clear her head and attempt to move on.

18 year old Chloe is avoiding applying to University. She doesn’t really know what she wants to do with her life yet. When she spots an advert looking for an assistant to help with the restoration and running of a new café she decides it would make the perfect summer job. With accommodation included it would be perfect. She would stay for the summer, wait for her A Level results then decide what she would do with the rest of her life.

When the three of them come together, much more than a working relationship is formed. I really enjoyed how Lily, Kate and Chloe’s relationships developed as they worked hard together to re-open the café as a coffee shop. Their problems, worries and emotions, although very different, are all very relatable. It isn’t long before they are much more to each other than just work colleagues and the coffee shop is no longer just a short term option.

This is definitely a feel good read. Sad in places, but mostly happy and uplifting. I would happily recommend it to anyone.

Secrets, Lies & Love (The Somerley Series Book 2)

Secrets, Lies & Love cover

Well, what a fabulous book! If you like a love story which is not too mushy, you will love this. It’s full of likeable characters and some you will no doubt be able to relate to.

I make no secret of the fact that I am a massive Mel Sherratt fan. Her Allie Shenton series, The Estate Series and her stand alone novel, Watching Over You, are all excellent, so imagine my excitement when Mel told me she also writes chick lit under a pen-name! Stirred With Love was a fabulous story and this is equally fabulous.

I love how close this bunch of family and friends are. They work together on the market, although not always happily, and always look out for each other even though some have secrets they are reluctant to share.

Louise is a single Mum. Having had her daughter, Charley, at 18 she has never told a soul who the father is. Not even her best friend, Sam. She was married for a short time, but that wasn’t to be. Now she longs to be loved and cherished by someone, even if she won’t admit that to herself. Luckily she can rely on Matt to look after her and Charley. Matt sometimes feels like a glorified babysitter, only seemingly needed at the weekends when Louise wants to go out and get drunk, but he’s always there for her and he loves Charley as if she were his own. Everyone can see that Matt and Louise are crazy about each other, but neither of them seem willing to admit it. Will they ever get it together?

Charley is 15 and is struggling at school due to bullies who are aware of her mother’s active social life. She feels they are tarring her with the same brush and starts to resent her mother for going out and getting drunk all the time. She falls out with her best friend and feels like the only person she can rely on is Alex, a boy she has been chatting to online, but has yet to meet. At least he understands her.

I can totally relate to Louise and Charley’s relationship. I have two teenagers myself, a son and a daughter, and my relationship with my daughter can be challenging, shall we say, at times. As a mother you feel like you can’t do right for doing wrong sometimes, but we do forget what it was like to be 15. This was a good reminder to just be there and listen.

Sam is married to Reece, but is worried her marriage isn’t going to survive for much longer. Will they manage to rekindle what they once shared?

Nicci is all loved up with Jay, but struggles with the fact that he doesn’t seem keen on marrying her when she is so desperate to marry him. She dreams of their big day, but fears it may never happen.

Ryan is married to Sarah, with two beautiful children, but he has cheated before and it doesn’t take him long to fall for Jess’s charms when she returns from London and sets her sights on him. Jess is pregnant, by a married man who now wants nothing to do with her. Maybe if she can get her claws into Ryan, she could pass off the baby as his. Why should everyone else be happy when she’s miserable?

Unfortunately not everyone has a fairytale happy ending.

This book has everything. Love, family, friendship, secrets and lies, happiness and heartbreak. You’ll love it!

Second Chances at Love (The Somerley Series Book 3)

Second Chance at Love cover

I make no secret of the fact that I am a massive fan of Mel’s / Marcie’s. I have genuinely loved everything she has written and I’m always very excited to read her new releases. I feel blessed to be able to read them prior to publication. I’ve been lucky enough to meet Mel a few times now and we chat fairly regularly via email, Facebook, Twitter etc. I like to think we are friends 🙂

If you still haven’t read any of Mel’s or Marcie’s books, you really should. You will love them!

Anyway, it took me all of my time not to start reading this immediately, but I was determined to save it for my weekend away in Northumberland and what a wonderful weekend it has been. Not only have I enjoyed the quality time with my husband and babies, but I have had the pleasure of getting to know Riley, Sadie, Esther, Dan, Cooper, Ash and the rest of the gang. What a lovely friendship they share. Riley, Sadie and Dan also work together at Chandler’s shoe shop. Having a job you love is a blessing and getting on well with those you work with is priceless. The shop isn’t doing so well though so, with Riley’s lead they embark on a social media campaign (even involving a flash mob dance) in an attempt to bring the customers in. Local journalist, Kim Nash 🙂 and photographer, Ethan, are on hand to help. All goes well initially, but nothing is ever that straight forward.

Riley hasn’t had much luck in love. After a long term relationship ended she thinks she might have finally met ‘the one’ in Nicholas, but he leaves her heart-broken too. When she meets Ethan and acknowledges there is a spark between them, she is reluctant to trust. Would he be worth the risk?

Sadie is grieving for her husband, Ross. He died a few months previously, of cancer. Her 6 year old daughter, Esther, helps to keep her going along with her job and her friends. She doesn’t know where she would be without them, but being a widow at 35 is not easy and worrying about the possibility of the shop closing doesn’t help. She’s happy to help with whatever it takes to keep it open. She can’t imagine working anywhere else.

Dan feels the same way. They are all so close and having to find another job would be hard. His love life isn’t great either and his friends mean the world to him. They need to keep the shop open!

I loved the banter between the group of friends. Their stories are very real and as with all friendships they have their ups and downs. All of the main characters are very likeable which helped to make this book a joy to read. I think I would get on with them in real life 🙂

Cooper’s friendship with Sadie is heart-warming. He is a lovely character.

It was funny, for me, reading about Paul and Christine (Sadie’s in-laws) as we have close friends (married) called Paul and Christine.

Dan made me laugh!

I even warmed to Suzanne in the end.

I was willing them all to succeed in keeping the shop open and for them to find the happiness they are craving.

All in all, this is a lovely story. I was hooked from the start and didn’t want to put it down, but as much as I wanted to keep reading, I didn’t want it to end either. Having said that, the ending is beautiful! It did make me cry.

I’m sure a lot of people will relate to these characters and their stories.

I recommend to everyone who loves a bit of romance, true friendship, a bit of a giggle and shoes!

I LOVED this book and I’m so thrilled for Tanya that it’s getting a whole new lease of life!

ICYMI

Here’s my review….

(written 10th February 2020)

That Special Someone (now re-titled Desperately Seeking Normal) has been, unread, on my bookcase for far too long and I am SO glad that I finally got to read it! I am a big fan of Tanya Bullock’s so why it’s taken me so long to read this is beyond me. Simply too many books and not enough time, unfortunately.

What a beautiful, powerful and emotional story!

That Special Someone centres around single Mum, Izzie, and her 18 year old, learning-disabled, daughter, Jaya. Having never known her father or any grandparents, Jaya has only ever had her mother. They have only ever really had each other.

Izzie is fiercely protective of Jaya and isn’t really prepared for her to become an adult. When Jaya announces that she would like to be married and have babies, Izzie just goes into panic mode. She had thought Jaya would just live with her forever, but she is forced to confront the fact that Jaya is a beautiful young lady with wants and needs of her own.

As a mother I can totally understand how hard it is to let your children grow up, make their own decisions and mistakes and trust that you’ve brought them up well enough to be responsible for themselves (my children are 19 and 18). However, if your child has any kind of disability or difficulty then it must a hundred times harder. Izzie comes across as completely neurotic at times, but I totally got her, and my heart went out to her.

When Jaya falls for her teaching assistant at college the story takes a completely different direction. Jaya is just dreaming of her happy future with the man she loves and doesn’t have any malicious intent in her actions, but clearly doesn’t anticipate the hurt she is about to cause. I could almost physically feel the pain Izzie endures at this time. I can’t even imagine what I would do in the same situation.

I love how this story alternates from the point of view of the different characters, almost like diary entries. Looking at the same situation from the very different perspectives of Izzie and Jaya was captivating. Jaya’s innocence, and naivety, is so beautifully written. It’s so clever how effortlessly this contrast’s to Izzie’s viewpoint as a protective mother, living on her nerves and completely defensive on behalf of her daughter. The bond they share is blatantly unbreakable.

This is such an amazing story full of love and raw emotion, with a beautiful ending. I loved it!

Confessions

Confessions

Caro Land

(Review written 11/06/2020)

Having read, and loved, Convictions by Caro Land I was SO glad I had a copy of Confessions to start straight away! I have been totally gripped once again!

This is an excellent second book in the Natalie Bach series and although I have to read a series in order, and highly recommend that you read Convictions, this book would read easily as a standalone.

This book is quite an emotional rollercoaster for Natalie, and other characters featured throughout. Gavin Savage is one of my favourite characters and my heart just broke for him when his family suffers a devastating tragedy. Natalie is naturally affected too as Gavin is one of her closest friends and colleagues. She helps by working at Savage Solicitors whilst Gavin quite rightly prioritises his family. During this time, she finds herself dealing with a complicated and heart-wrenching case of assisted suicide (I can’t even begin to imagine).

Natalie also has her own personal relationship with Wes to deal with (I did want to bang their heads together at one point!) as well as tying up some loose ends from her past. There is such a lot going on in this book, but it flows perfectly, and everyone plays a vital part in adding depth to the story. I found myself easily swept up in their lives.

Natalie is an easily likeable character. I can imagine being friends with her. She is beautifully flawed which makes her so real and believable. She has a quick temper at times, and over analyses pretty much everything but she has a heart of gold. She’s always trying to do her best for everyone, professionally and personally, to her own detriment at times. She deeply craves true love and a family of her own and I truly wished this for her.

This book made me cry, at times, and hold my breath in anticipation but it also made me smile, a lot.

Once again, a captivating story of love, loss, friendship and family with a fascinating insight into the daily lives of solicitors. I LOVED it!

Many thanks to the author and publisher for my review copy. I will more than happily recommend!

Convictions

Convictions

Caro Land

(Review written 04/06/2020)

I finished Convictions late last night. There was no way I was going to go to sleep until I had! This has been a real page turner for me. I’m only sorry that I’m this late to the party.

I’m not sure I’ve ever read any crime thrillers/mysteries written from the perspective of a solicitor before, but I really enjoyed the legal aspects of this story. Natalie Bach is a brilliant character. I warmed to her straight away. I loved the fact that she had returned home from Mallorca to be there for her mother, Anna, who had suffered a stroke, but had thankfully recovered well. Anna is a lovely character too. I found it interesting following Natalie’s progress finding her feet in the legal world again having run a bar in Mallorca and being dumped by her boyfriend, finding herself single again as she approaches her fortieth birthday. That can’t be easy for anyone. It doesn’t seem to take her long before she finds herself well and truly in the thick of things. She certainly works with some interesting characters! I think Gavin Savage is my favourite. Loved him!

I found Natalie’s relationship with Wes quite fascinating, although I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about it all for a good chunk of the story. The chemistry between them is palpable but their circumstances are far from ideal for the start of a new romance. I did hope there would be a happy ending, one way or another though.

As for the cases Natalie finds herself involved with, well what can I say…. It just goes to show that you never know what might go on behind closed doors or what anyone might be capable of when pushed to their limits. This story also puts a whole new spin on ‘a woman scorned’.

There are many shocking moments throughout this book.

This book is a completely compelling, fast-paced story full of secrets, lies, control, obsession, revenge and addiction but also humour, love, friendship, family loyalty and forgiveness. I LOVED it, and I read it in two days which anyone who knows me will know that’s quick for me. An excellent start to a new series. I can’t wait to read book 2!

A stunning new drama from Caroline England, writing as Caro Land.

There are two sides to every crime…

Returning home to care for her ill mother, and approaching her fortieth birthday, Natalie Bach is devastated when she’s dumped without explanation by her long-term boyfriend.

Struggling to pick herself up, she’s offered her old job at Goldman Law. Jack Goldman’s estranged son Julian has been arrested for attempted murder and he wants Natalie to find out why.

With the help of fellow solicitor Gavin Savage, Natalie sets out to investigate, but with a series of red herrings ahead, will she ever discover the truth?

And can Natalie avoid her personal problems interfering with the case?

What everyone is saying about Convictions:

“A brilliant read with surprising twists and great characters”

“more twists and turns than you could count.” – Ginger Book Geek

this book had everything; a peek into the legal world, great characterisation, compelling darkness complemented with a lightness of humour as well as a satisfying ending”

“A brilliantly crafted novel. I was totally engrossed in the characters and plot from start to finish. I couldn’t put it down.” – Amanda Robson, Sunday Times bestselling author of Obsession, Guilt and Envy

The Last One To See Her

Mark Tilbury

(Review written on 31/05/2020)

WOW! Brilliant, as always!

Mark Tilbury’s writing never fails to grab my attention and The Last One To See Her kept me gripped from the very first page to the very last word.

When 11-year-old Jodie Willis goes missing whilst fetching milk from the local shop, just a few hundred yards away, her mother is understandably beside herself with worry. I can’t even begin to imagine, and my heart went out to her. Every parent’s worst nightmare!

Mathew Hillock, and just one other local man, were the last to see her alive. Mathew is convinced this man, not known for being the most pleasant of characters (he really did turn my stomach), had something to do with her disappearance but has no proof. However, Jodie’s body is found in Mathew’s garden shed, days later, and almost everyone is convinced of his guilt. He’s an odd character in most people’s eyes, due to his limitations caused by a childhood trauma, so he must be guilty. Mathew even starts to doubt himself even though there isn’t a scrap of evidence linking him to this murder. I honestly didn’t know what to believe and was as desperate as those involved to find out the truth! I really felt for Mathew as he seemed like an easy target. His back story is heart-breaking. I kept an open mind though as you never know which direction these stories will take. There are always plenty of surprises with Mark Tilbury and this book was no exception.

When I realised the truth, it made me feel quite sick.

#TwistedTilbury

A disturbing (as expected) but captivating read with a fascinating cast of characters, some you will love and others you really would not want to come across in real life. Fast paced and very clever with twists and turns galore. This author never ceases to amaze me.

I honestly don’t know what else to say other than buy it and read it for yourself. If you love a good psychological crime thriller you will love this as it’s nothing short of excellent.

 All the stars from me!

I will more than happily recommend to anyone and everyone.

Many thanks to Mark Tilbury for my review copy and for the opportunity to be a part of the blog tour.

Blurb

He says he is innocent. So why did he lie?

Mathew Hillock was the last person to see eleven-year-old Jodie Willis alive. When her dead body turns up four days later in his garden shed, the police think he’s guilty of her murder. So do most people in the town. But there’s no DNA evidence to link him to the crime.

Battling the weight of public opinion and mental illness due to a childhood head trauma, he sinks into a deep depression.

Can Mathew do what the police failed to do and find evidence linking the real killer to the crime?

The Last One to See Her is a terrifying story of what happens when you’re accused of a crime and no one believes you are innocent.

KISS ME IN THE DARK compiles a selection of deliciously dark chapters from bestselling romance authors with additional, never-before-seen content. We’re hoping to introduce new readers to our world and also give our loyal readers a chance to get lost in the stories they love with these bonus scenes. It’s only a taste, just three chapters each…but it’s enough for you to get addicted and want more.

It includes:

Monica James—Bad Saint; bonus content is the first chapter of the upcoming release The Devil’s Crown—All the Pretty Things Trilogy spin-off.

Aleatha Romig—Unconventional; bonus content is the prologue, an outside prospective on this stalker romance.

Amo Jones—In Fury Lies Mischief; bonus content: Eli’s Transition.

Callie Hart

Cora Reilly—Luca Vitiello; bonus content is the prologue and first chapter of the upcoming standalone Fragile Longing—an age-gap arranged marriage romance.

Giana Darling––Enthralled; bonus content is a new chapter from hero Alexander Davenport’s POV.

K Webster—This is War, Baby; bonus content is a new thrilling “training” chapter in the villainous Gabe’s POV with Baylee.

Lili St. Germain—Vicious Prince; bonus content is never-before-seen chapters from the main characters past.

S.M. Soto—Deception and Chaos; bonus content is a never-before-seen chapter written from Creed’s POV.

Parker S. Huntington—Devious Lies; bonus content is a never-before-seen email from Nash to Emery.

Willow Winters—A Kiss to Tell; bonus content is a never-before-seen chapter.

So come, sit, and enjoy a taste of the darkness…you just may like it.

Author’s Note

This anthology was hatched because dark romances and their creators have a stigma associated with them. Yes, we like coloring outside of the lines, and no, we don’t write your run-of-the-mill stories, but that shouldn’t devalue our art. Nor should it be grounds for it to be censored.

Reading is subjective. What someone sees as black, others may see as pink, but that doesn’t make one opinion more valuable than the other. We all have different tastes in everything—that’s the beauty of being human.

Beyond this note, we have included samples of our works, hoping to introduce new readers to our world and also give our loyal readers a chance to get lost in the stories they love with these bonus scenes. It’s only a taste, just three chapters each…but it’s enough for you to get addicted and want more.

We cannot promise that when boy meets girl, they fall in love and then live happily ever after. However, what we can guarantee are kick-ass heroines and antiheroes you’ll love to hate from a bunch of authors who work their asses off to give life to the craziness inside their heads.

So come, sit, and enjoy a taste of the darkness…you just may like it.

We dare you.

Love,

Monica, Aleatha, Amo, Callie, Cora, Giana, K Webster, Lili, Parker, S.M. Soto & Willow.

20 Books of Summer

I have finally decided on my 20 books for the #20BooksofSummer20 challenge hosted by 746 Books

If you fancy joining in check out the details here – 20 Books of Summer 2020 with @cathy746books #20BooksofSummer

Here are my choices (in no particular order)

ConvictionsConfessions

The Devil's DiceTurn to DustCarrion_eBookDead Man's DaughterCut to the BoneCircuitThe ShrineBedlamGuardian of LiesHow to Save a LifeSummer on a Sunny IslandSticks and StonesDo Not Disturb

If He WakesOnly to SleepHer Last MoveStar of the NorthThe Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker

I decided to use this challenge as a way to make a bit of a dent in my Netgalley list. Nine of these titles are from that list. The other eleven are a mixture of review commitments which fall within the challenge’s time frame and books I just don’t want to put off until September! (Field of Lies has been on my list for FAR too long already!)

It was SO hard to choose my next 20 reads out of the hundreds I have on my TBR list! If you’re joining in, how did you decide on your list? Feel free to share your sign up links in the comments so I can share your post, if I haven’t already.
