#PublicationDay Guardian of Lies (Detective Inspector Doug Taylor Book 3) by John Pye @CathedralOfLies #indieauthor

Wishing John Pye huge Congratulations on publication of the 3rd book in his Detective Inspector Doug Taylor series, Guardian Of Lies! 🙂 I’m looking forward to reading this as I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series (I will add links at the end of this post).

Guardian of Lies

Description…..

A death in the family and an unremarkable house burglary suddenly catapult Taylor and Harding outside their comfort zone and into the murky world of the Security Services. The interest of MI5 and connections to a horrible death thirteen years earlier take the two detectives on a bizarre journey to an unknown destination with a frightful history.
A risk-taking journalist uses criminal methods to try to get to the big story first, but has no idea exactly what he is getting into or of the dreadful consequences of his actions.
Foreign agents, espionage and high powered thrilling action take the narrative forward as an issue of serious national security emerges. The fact that the story is based on many real events is all the more breath taking.

Intense Relationships in Closed Communities, and the Stress and Tensions of Life

I was inspired to write Mystical Circles by, among other things, the challenge and the dual effect of family relationships; family relationships which seek to protect and encourage and advise, and which sometimes turn in a negative direction, when they may stultify and suffocate and control.

I had an idea in my mind of an older sister shocked and horrified by a decision her impetuous young sister had made – a decision which could impact on the rest of her life, and which might lead her down a path the older sister thought destructive.

So I began my tale of Juliet, a freelance journalist who has begun to establish herself well in life, horrified by unexpected news from younger sister Zoe, fresh out of university, no plans in mind for a career, who has been captivated by a new spiritual outlook – and a very seductive cult leader – or so it appears to Juliet.

Of course, when a novelist sets out to create a story, real people influence fictional characters. And then those characters take off, and develop a mind of their own, and soon they are controlling the plot and driving the novelist along certain paths. I have long been fascinated by human personality and the ways in which different individuals interact with each other, either leaching energy from or building up those who they come into contract with. Likewise, the whole area of group dynamics is a source of inspiration for me. I have been in many different groups of people throughout my life – whether that be within a family gathering, an office environment, a structured workshop or psychological therapy group, or a new age spiritual group like the one portrayed in Mystical Circles – or, indeed, a writing workshop or conference.

Another of my inspirations for Mystical Circles was an Arvon Foundation writing course I attended at Totleigh Barton farmhouse in Devon. I’ve been to many other other writing weekends and courses too, which have fed into the events of my own novels. Look no further than a group of writers, if you want to plumb the depths of emotional anguish, and numerous psychological tensions such as jealousy, euphoria, new hope, the depths of despair. I like the idea of exploring the intense relationships that develop in closed communities and certainly a week closeted together with other writers in a remote farmhouse gives plenty of fuel for such a scenario as the one I develop in Mystical Circles.

The Wheel of Love, the new age spiritual group which Zoe has joined, is a claustrophobic hothouse environment. Here in this close circle, as the blurb says, intrigues, liaisons and relationships flare and flourish or fizzle out quickly. This acts as a strong challenge to Juliet who is a freelance journalist and who starts out intending to remain objective…

Mystical Circles is out in a new edition with a new cover design on 5 September 2017.

Mystical Circles Front Cover Final Version4

Publisher: Luminarie; 3 edition (5th September 2017)

Description…..

“Hi, you in crowded, stressed old London from me in the peaceful, perfect Cotswolds. Massive change of plan. I’m in love. Craig’s gorgeous, sexy, intelligent. Paradise here. Staying forever.”

Juliet, concerned that her younger sister has fallen in love with the charismatic Craig, leader of the Wheel of Love, sets off for the Cotswolds to investigate, fearful that Zoe has become entangled with a religious cult.

She arrives at Craig’s community hoping to rescue Zoe. But  intrigues, liaisons and relationships flare and flourish or fizzle out quickly within this close circle, and despite her reservations, Juliet is drawn into the Wheel of Love… with completely unforeseen consequences.

She Did It

Publisher: Blood Red Books (19th September 2017)

My review…..

First of all I would like to thank Mel Sherratt for the honour of being one of only 20 people to read She Did It in advance of publication day. Proud, as always, to be part of #TeamSherratt 🙂

I always look forward to a new book by Mel Sherratt and I am never disappointed! She Did It is different to most of Mel Sherratt’s other books. More of a psychological thriller like Watching Over You (which I absolutely loved!). There is a police procedural element to it, but this story very much centres around Tamara and Esther. I really warmed to Tamara. She has been used to the high life and is doing her best to re-build that life after a particularly difficult time. A time she is desperately trying to leave in the past. She has started her own business and when she takes on Esther she thinks things are really starting to look up. Esther knows her stuff and helps to secure them a big job. One which could easily lead to more work. Tamara starts to relax a bit. She begins to confide in Esther and starts to appreciate the friendship she is beginning to develop with her. She has no idea of Esther’s past or who she really is. She is totally not prepared for the danger she faces as Esther uses her to get close to someone she aims to seek revenge on for her painful past.

Esther is quite a character. She absolutely terrified me! I have to say though, I did have conflicting feelings about her. Mostly she scared the crap out of me and I wanted to scream at Tamara for not seeing through her. I did also feel very sorry for her when we are told of what she went through in the past. Not that this condones any of her actions, but goes some way to explaining why she has serious issues. I wouldn’t call her a likeable character though.

This book is full of tension and suspense. It was almost like watching one of those films where you’re screaming at the TV, “It’s her, it’s her! Don’t go in there!” She Did It is the perfect title!

I loved that Tamara’s business is centred around book publicity too.

A brilliantly written, character driven story with some shocking twists. And that ending!!

It certainly kept me on the edge of my seat and I highly recommend.

Description…..

Work colleague. Friend. Killer.

From the million seller author comes a standalone gripping psychological thriller.

A successful businesswoman, Tamara enjoys her champagne lifestyle to the full. At least, that is the front she displays to the world. As well as being lonely, she’s running out of money. A promising new member of staff brings the injection of fresh blood needed to win the contract that will turn things around.

Working for Tamara is a perfect ruse for Esther. But, along with fake references and qualifications, she also has a plan for revenge. Sensing Tamara’s vulnerability, Esther uses their acquaintance as a way of getting close to someone who hurt her in the past.

Tamara is keeping things secret. Esther has a dark side she is trying to hide. For both of them, lying is a habit. But when mistakes begin to catch up with Esther, and people start dying, Tamara realises she’s chosen the wrong person to trust as a friend.

Perfect for fans of The Girlfriend, Lies and Behind Closed Doors.

Praise for She Did It:
‘Mel Sherratt is on outstanding form with this pacy, page-turning thriller! It had all the thrills and chills, with just the right amount of gritty realism that sets her writing apart from the crowd. Fans of Behind Closed Doors and The Girl on the Train will love it!’ LJ Ross, author of DCI Ryan Series.

‘A riveting psychological thriller which had me turning the pages long into the night. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a dark, twisty-turny read.’ Caroline Mitchell, author of Witness and DS Ruby Preston Series.

About the author…..

My novels take you to the heart of the crime. I write police procedurals, psychological suspense and crime dramas – fiction with a punch. Shortlisted for the prestigious CWA (Crime Writer’s Association) Dagger in Library Award 2014, my inspiration comes from authors such as Martina Cole, Lynda la Plante, Mandasue Heller and Elizabeth Haynes.

Since 2012, all ten of my crime novels have been bestsellers, each one climbing into the kindle UK top 20 and I’ve had several number ones. I’ve also had numerous Kindle All-star awards, for best read author and best titles.

DETECTIVE EDEN BERRISFORD works in a community intelligence team and helps to gather information and intel for investigations. THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR is the first book, followed by DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU.

TAUNTING THE DEAD is part police procedural/part psychological thriller. It was a standalone for two years but I have now written two more books with Detective Sergeant Allie Shenton as a main character to create a trilogy. FOLLOW THE LEADER is book two and ONLY THE BRAVE is book three.

THE ESTATE SERIES are a mix of psychological suspense and family life with a sprinkling of grit and a dash of menace – where drama meets crime. There are four at the moment, available individually or you can read the first three as a box set. WRITTEN IN THE SCARS, is the latest in the series to be published.

WATCHING OVER YOU is a standalone psychological thriller. It’s dark in places, light in places, disturbing in places too – where obsession and friendship turn into murder.

I also write women’s fiction under the pen name of Marcie Steele. Stirred with Love, The Little Market Stall of Hope and Heartbreak and The Second Chance Shoe Shop are out now.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer) and make liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for some of my books. You can find out more at my website http://www.melsherratt.co.uk or I’m on Twitter at @writermels

Why Cornisea Castle is your perfect escape – a mini guide to its (secret) attractions

1. Cornisea Castle isn’t just any castle: it lies on a tidal island, which means the island is cut off from the mainland at high tide, while you can walk over across a centuries old causeway at low tide
2. All the Cornish food specialties, like pasty, can be tried at the island’s very own eatery while sweet treats fill the shelves at the authentic bakery.
3. Booklovers find a treasure trove at The Cowled Sleuth Bookshop where the leatherbound volumes might just contain a treasure map.
4. The castle has its own gardens full of blossoming plants and impressive trees where birds make their nests and even lizards come out to sunbathe.
5. The castle’s yard is the perfect place to lounge as it has comfy chairs and braziers which at night give warmth and a little light which still leaves room for stargazing.

6. In the castle you might run into chaotic Lord Bolingbrooke, his globetrotting son Oliver and their friendly giants Rufus (mastiff) and Nero (Great Dane).
7. Always eager to show you around are new arrival Guinevere, a costume designer from London with her adorable dachshund Dolly. Dolly is perky, smart and always in for adventure around the island’s breathtaking sights.
8. Speaking of adventure: one island tale mentions the goblet of Rose and Stars, a rare bejewelled goblet, possibly hidden in the castle gardens and associated with the fatal romance between a lady and her lord of the castle.
9. Maybe by collecting puzzle pieces around the island, you can figure out where the goblet is hidden and see the rubies and diamonds for yourself.
10. But look out: you’re not the only one searching for the goblet and some people are determined to do anything to get their hands on that priceless artefact.

Join the treasure hunt and download Rubies in the Roses for your very own Cornish escape. You can read it as standalone, although if you like more Cornisea Island, you can go back and read Death Plays a Part where the reenactment of a medieval trial leads to death in the dungeons.

uniquebloggeraward

A BIG thank you to Claire at BrizzleLass Books for my nomination 🙂 If you don’t follow Claire’s blog already, you really should!

The rules:

Share the link to the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you.

  • Answer the questions.
  • In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award.
  • Ask them three questions.

Claire’s questions:

You can have dinner with one fictional character, who would you choose and why?

Okay, I can’t decide between the many different books characters I could choose from, so I’m going to go with a TV series character and without a doubt it would be Dean Winchester from Supernatural. If you know of him you will know why! He is funny and really, really, really gorgeous! Almost as gorgeous as my husband!!

What do you enjoy most about blogging?

The books is an obvious answer, but I have to say my absolute favourite part of blogging is the fab people I have met and got to know, even though I haven’t met most in person as yet. The support and friendship shared amongst book bloggers, authors and publishers is just amazing, even if we mostly only know each other online.

How many books are on your TBR pile at the moment?

I daren’t even count!!

I now nominate:

No pressure though, I know how busy you all are!

My questions:

If you could invite any fictional character (from a book) for coffee, who would it be and where would you take them?

If you were to organise a book blogger get together in your hometown, which venue would you choose?

A favourite author is naming a character after you in their next book. What kind of character would you like to be?

I have heard it said, that when you can’t believe your eyes, you don’t. And I didn’t.

My mirror image and I came to a stop, a few paces from each other, while my brain struggled to rationalise. The best-case scenario I could come up with was that the accumulated strain of the last few days had finished me off and I needed sedation, and possibly putting away in a locked room. How long we would have stood there, staring at each other I really couldn’t say, but Roland emerged from the kitchen, not looking his usually laid-back self, as one might expect if Gordon Ramsay was still holding sway in there. He was brushing what looked like flour from his jacket – I wondered what had been thrown at him – when he saw the two of us.

The light in the corridor was dim and I watched as he also struggled to make sense of what he was seeing. The other me, turned slowly on her heel to face him and tilted her head slightly to one side.

“Sandra?” He said. I took a breath and opened my mouth, I wasn’t sure I could get anything out, but thought I should make the effort. A fine shaking had started in my legs and was slowly moving up my body.

“It’s me.” I said urgently, “I mean, this is me.” It didn’t make much sense, so I tried again, “Roland, I don’t know what that is, but this is me.” My voice sounded high and shrill and I didn’t feel as if I’d clarified the situation much, but it’s not really the sort of situation you expect to have to clarify is it?

She/me was wearing exactly what I was wearing, and as she started to move towards the now backing-away Roland, I saw she moved the way I moved. I thought with horror, if she spoke, if she said anything at all, I’d be lost. I did the only thing that made any kind of sense in that moment, I leapt forward and threw both my arms tight round her body. It felt indescribably repulsive, because she/I was completely solid in my grasp and she was wriggling and bucking violently to get away. In that instant, I knew exactly what I had to do, the only thing to do. I reached up to her/my face, clamping my thumb and forefinger bruisingly on her/my lower jaw, turning her face to mine, forcing her mouth wide with the pressure of my fingers. I hauled in a breath, feeling my lungs expand and then I hissed it out, hard, into her. It was a long, sibilant, snake of a hiss, full of the complete revulsion I was feeling and the face, her/my face, so close to mine began to melt, falling away like wax in a flame. And if you’ve never watched your own face melt before your eyes, it’s not something I’d recommend. The progression from drooping misshapen flesh, to bare bone, to bone dripping down a melting neck, was swift and appalling, and then the still wriggling body in my arms, disintegrated and fell away completely. On the uncarpeted floor was a pile of ash, shifting slightly back and forward in the draught and with a shining, unmoving, solid object in the middle – the gold chain and initial necklace I often wore, I put my hand to my throat – was wearing now.

Roland moved forward and caught me as my legs gave way, mercifully pulling me away from what was on the floor and towards him. Wordlessly, he put one arm round my waist and half dragged, half carried me down the corridor, the short distance to the kitchen. I found I was still holding firm to my notebook with my pen hooked into the wire binding, that was good, you just never know when you might need to make a note or two.

Witch Dust. High Res. Front Cover

Title of Book: Witch Dust

Author name: Marilyn Messik

Genre: Paranormal Thriller

Release Date: 28th August 2017

Publisher: Matador

About the book…..

“A red gash of a mouth rimmed with impossibly tiny, razor-sharp teeth yawned wide, then swift as a snake, she bent and struck . . . “

For Sandra, daughter of illusionists, Adam and Ophelia, life’s never been run of the mill. But when Adam’s wandering eye lights on yet another conquest, it proves a chorus girl too far, and Sandra’s caught in the reverberations of her parents acrimonious parting. Coerced into restoring her depressed Mother to the bosom of a family Sandra never knew existed, she’s sucked into a situation that even for her is unnerving.

From being without a single relative, she suddenly acquires several she’d rather do without, and learns a few home truths she’d prefer not to know. Ophelia it appears, has not been entirely honest about any number of things. There’s no doubt in Sandra’s mind, the sooner she puts as much distance as possible between herself, her newly discovered nearest and dearest, their peculiar tendencies and their failing hotel business, the very much happier she’s going to be.

Dire straits call for desperate measures and Sandra reluctantly rises to the occasion. A hanged housemaid, a fly-on-the-wall documentary, The Psychic Society and a quasi co-operative journalist all handled correctly should, she reckons, get the family business up and running, which will allow her to do the same – as fast as she can, and in the opposite direction. Things unfortunately move swiftly from bad to farce and then get a hell of a lot darker. One moment Sandra’s struggling to save the family’s income, the next, she’s battling to save their lives.

Turns out, some darknesses, once buried, are best left undisturbed.

Marilyn was a regular feature and fiction writer for various national magazines when her children were small. She then set up her first business, selling toys, books and party goods from home, before opening first one shop then another. When she sold both shops she moved into the world of travel, focusing on Bed and Breakfasts and Country Inns in New England, USA. Her advisory, planning and booking service flourished and she concurrently launched a publishing company, producing an annual, full-colour accommodation guide. In 2007 she set up a copywriting consultancy, to help businesses shape their messages to optimum effect.

She’s the author of the Little Black Business Book series and the novels Relatively Strange and Even Stranger. She’s been married to her very patient husband for more years than he deserves and they have two children, five grandchildren and, somewhat to their surprise, several grand-dogs. Under the Spanish Stars (Wandering Skies) by Alli Sinclair @allisinclair @lyricalpress #BookReview

under-the-spanish-stars

Publisher: Lyrical Press (6th December 2016)

Description…..

Previously published by Mira in Australia and New Zealand

Amid the vivid beauty of Granada, a woman entrusted with unraveling a family secret will discover the truth about her heritage—and the alluring promise of love…

When her beloved grandmother falls ill, Charlotte Kavanagh will do whatever she asks of her—even if it means traveling to a country that broke her abuela’s heart. Can an unsigned painting of a flamenco dancer unlock the secrets of her grandmother’s youth in Spain? To find the answers she needs, Charlotte must convince the charismatic and gifted musician, Mateo Vives to introduce her to a secluded gypsy clan.

The enigmatic Mateo speaks the true language of flamenco, a culture Charlotte must learn to appreciate if she wants to understand her grandmother’s past—and the flamenco legend that has moved souls to beauty, and bodies to the heights of passion. As Mateo leads her into the captivating world of the music and the dance, Charlotte embraces her own long-denied creative gift and the possibility of a future rich with joy…

My review…..

Under The Spanish Stars is another book which has been waiting ever so patiently on my Kindle and Netgalley list.

When we first meet Charlotte, her Grandmother (Abuela) is a very poorly lady and has asked Charlotte to travel to Granada, where she spent her youth, to find out the truth behind an unsigned painting her father had given to her.

The story alternates between Abuela telling her story back in 1944 and the present day when Charlotte is trying to find out the truth of her Grandmother’s past. A past which she has spoken very little off previously.

It’s hardly a quick and easy journey for Charlotte given that she lives in Australia and she is torn between carrying out her Abuela’s wishes and being by her side whilst she is so poorly. Little does she know how at home she will start feel in Granada, especially when she finds herself drawn to the charismatic Mateo.

Under The Spanish Stars is a lovely romantic read, but with a lot more depth than I was expecting, if I’m honest. The chemistry between the characters is very real and believable. Their stories are both heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time. The story features a lot of Spanish history and the detailed descriptions of Flamenco are so full of passion. It was easy to picture the dancers and the musicians as they performed and I could almost feel the electricity in the room, as if I was there.

All sorts of family secrets are unravelled as Charlotte uncovers the truth, one which is especially devastating for Abuela. At the same time Charlotte finds herself imagining a future very different to the one she once saw herself living.

This is a captivating read which I am happy to recommend.

Chapter Two

Simon

Stansted Airport, 0730 hrs. The team stands, wearing large
anoraks and baseball caps, waiting for something known as
the ‘Carnet’. The Carnet is a customs document allowing
the admission of television equipment into a foreign country
without the need to pay duty. “Have we got the Carnet yet,
chaps?” shouts Simon to two men in the middle distance. He
chews gum anxiously. “Come on, come on.” Simon is the
director. It’s his job to get the crew to Ibiza.
His production manager, Kate, walks up to him. A woman
wearing a roll-neck jumper, carrying a large file and whose
only gesture to grooming is a sleek blonde bun of hair, she
rubs his shoulder affectionately. “IIWII,” she whispers. “It
Is What It Is.” Simon smiles, as if her touch is painful. Two
weeks of 24/7 filming in and around a beachside villa in Ibiza
putting a bunch of nobodies through a series of ridiculous
tasks. Particularly as they are all trying to be somebodies.
Plus one massive celebrity to arrive later. He sighs, thinks
of the money, all that overtime. It must be worth it. He’d far
rather be working on Panorama. “Come on, guys,” he mutters
beneath his breath.
While the crew fiddle around with a stack of bright, hard,
shiny, ridged cases, the nobodies sit at a table drinking tea
and, in one case, whisky. They are the cast for the latest
series of the well-known daytime ITV reality show called Ibiza (or Bust). Each of them has signed up to go on holiday
with nine other unnamed, vaguely notorious people. In
Ibiza. For at least a week, possibly more. The hitch? They
each vote each other off. Everyone gets a £3,000 fee for
turning up and taking part. The final person on the show gets
£20,000. They have all just performed the first task, namely
the staged ‘Meet’.
Simon told them each what to do and they obeyed
him to the letter, like children. Everyone was brought
out one by one. They were each obliged to kiss everyone
else, twice, on the cheek and gush with unbridled and
spontaneous happiness. As if they knew each other. As if
they were friends. Famous friends. They must enthuse that
they are all going on holiday together to Ibiza. The show
promotes togetherness, but is of course designed to highlight
separation, confusion and confrontation. They greet each
other but inside, their heads are whirring with alarm and
confusion as they struggle to identify each other. They are
strangers but must seem as friends, individuals pretending
to be a gang.
They have been selected by Simon. They include Philip
Burrell, a contemporary artist with as yet unfulfilled ambitions
on winning the Turner Prize and a TV financial adviser called
Alan Makin. Both of these characters live on a notoriously
prestigious square in North London. They do not like each
other. Then there is Gemma, a ‘celebrity estate agent’, who
Simon rather suspects will go out first, and an ageing man
known as Jasper The Wizard, who once had a magic show
a long time ago on ITV. Then there is a married couple,
Nigel and Jocelyn, presenters of Families Ahoy!, a travel
show on a distant satellite channel for ‘adventurous parents
and their offspring’, a ‘celebrity farmer’ known as Moo,
whose fame largely lies in the feat of feeding a baby lamb
with human breast milk on Breakfast TV, and his partner,
Cresta, an obviously sexy It Girl who may or may not have
provided the breast milk. Finally, thinks Simon, the chap he
keeps forgetting. A contemporary hippie and environmental
protester called Fish.
This bunch is going to be joined on the island by a tenth, as
yet unknown celebrity. It is this person’s availability that is
responsible for not only the time, but also the place of the
filming. This is someone who is properly famous, thinks
Simon. He’s told the other contestants, the nonentities, about
the arrival of a tenth celebrity and was gratified to see the
effect it provoked. There is a distinct sense of tension about
the group, aided by the faint aroma of body odour.
“Well,” says one of the Adventurous Parents, stretching
her hands high above her head and in the process, revealing
two dark patches that have already started to form underneath
her arms. “Hope getting away has been easy for everyone.
It’s been a piece of cake so far for us. We haven’t even had
to worry about clearing it with the kids’ schools.” She looks
around, hoping someone will challenge her on this. “Because
they are all homeschooled, of course,” she continues.
“How many children have you got?” asks Gemma the
celebrity estate agent, who has a strong sense of conversational
duty.
“Eight,” says the Adventurous Parent.
Gemma widens her eyes, and can’t think of anything to say.
“My pelvic floor is just fine, if that’s what you are
wondering,” says the Adventurous Parent, “isn’t it, Nigel?”
Her husband giggles inanely.
Gemma, who has no children, is lost for words.
“You’ve moved into the Square?” says Philip to Alan
Makin, the TV financial adviser, with scant enthusiasm. Philip
is not sure he is very pleased about this. Finding a neighbour
on this show was not part of his plan. Indeed, he had hoped
that he might achieve this daytime televisual challenge wholly
undetected. Philip is a snob about most things, but particularly
about daytime television.
“Indeed I have!” says Alan loudly, looking around at
the other candidates. “Hey everyone, Philip here and I are
neighbours! I judged a talent show there earlier this year.
Fell in love with the Square. Wonderful Georgian rigour.
Marvellous use of light in the main rooms. Do you know it,
Gemma? Part of your catchment area? Great heritage. Very,
very well refurbished, if I may say so. Didn’t, er, didn’t you
take part in it, Philip? The talent show, I mean. I remember
you were there, weren’t you? Great fun.”
“I may have done, dear boy,” says Philip, who remembers
the event quite well. “So many things going on at the moment.”
He stares off into the distance. He is already regretting signing
up for this nonsense, regretting leaving his wife Gilda behind,
regretting leaving all his work just sitting idle in the studio. His
assistant, Jas, is going away too. There’ll be lot of work when
he gets home. He’s damned if he’ll be voted off first, however.
Let that idiot Alan Makin go for the fall.
A silence descends as everyone muses separately on the
forthcoming challenge. “Well, here we all are,” says Gemma
unnecessarily, touching her hair. “I was really amazed to see
who else would turn up on this!” She examines a manicured
hand. “I mean, it’s going to be great fun. I really have no idea
what to expect! Who do you think is going to win? Although
of course I don’t think it’s about winning, of course. It’s just
about making some great telly, isn’t it! You guys. We are all
going to have a hoot! It’s just about fun!”
“No,” says Philip drily. “It’s about winning.”
There is a silence. Jasper The Wizard drains his whisky rather
loudly and stands up, barely concealing a burp. “Sorry, chaps.
Right. Anyone for Departures?”
“Are we all getting on?” asks Simon, bustling over to the
table. “Have we all got our boarding passes, hand luggage,
everything? Has everyone been to the loo?”
“We are not children,” says Philip acidly, quickly smiling
in Simon’s direction to let him know that he didn’t really mean
it. “Arse,” he mutters under his breath.
The group is herded by Simon beside the Body Shop
while a camera sets up the shot, and then on instruction from
Simon, moves together, talking and wildly laughing, towards
Customs. Cresta, the It Girl, leads the charge. Gemma notices
that Cresta always makes sure she is surrounded by a herd
of men, swinging her hair back and giggling whenever the
camera focuses on her.
“And… cut!” shouts Simon. “Brilliant! You are all
naturals!” Kate walks up to him and peers over his shoulder
at the group. “How on earth are we going to cope with this
gang?” she murmurs.
“I have absolutely no idea,” replies Simon. “But that is the
magic of television.”
At the gate, Alan Makin cheers up immensely because
he has been recognised by a member of the public. “Did you
see that?” he says, laughing loudly as he wanders back from
WH Smith. “Lady over there when I was buying a copy of the
Mail. Noticed me. Comes rushing over, oh she was so happy
to see me. Loves the shows! Think I probably made her day.
Of course, I had to have the obligatory selfie with her.” He
looks quickly across the group.
“That’s nice,” says Gemma. “I bet that happens to you a
lot.”
“Well, from time to time,” says Alan modestly. “I still have
the old fan base.”
The others remain silent. Alan’s fame and their
comparative lack of it, a lack that might prove fatal on this
show, hangs quivering in the air.
“I was once recognised on the Great Wall of China, funnily
enough,” says Jasper, presently.
Nobody says anything.
“Come on, then!” shouts Simon, making herding motions
with his hands.

I am a journalist and author. Between 1994-2004, I was the BBC’s Arts Correspondent during which time the Tate Modern opened. This provoked my first book The Tastemakers (T&H, 2001) which analysed why contemporary art became so fashionable in the Nineties.

After the BBC I wrote for The Sunday Times and was Arts Editor of the New Statesman. I’m now a columnist for the Independent and write for lots of other papers and magazines. In 2009 my husband and I and our four kids went around the world on a crazy project to visit the French overseas departments, which resulted in 6 TV documentaries for the Travel Channel and a book, Bonnes Vacances (Summersdale, 2011), a comic account of how to go around the world without leaving France.

My first novel The Square was published in 2015; its a comic romp set in a London garden square and came out of a fiction writing course run by University of East Anglia. When I’m not writing, I’m usually working in Hull. I’m chair of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 which is going to be one amazing year.

The Lucky Ones

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer (15th June 2017)

Description…..

It was the happiest day of her life. Little did she know it was also the last.

When a woman’s body is found in the grounds of a ruined priory, Detective Imogen Evans realises she is dealing with a serial killer—a killer whose victims appear to die in a state of bliss, eyes open, smiles forever frozen on their faces.

A few miles away, single dad Ben Hofland believes his fortunes are changing at last. Forced to move back to the sleepy village where he grew up following the breakdown of his marriage, Ben finally finds work. What’s more, the bullies who have been terrorising his son, Ollie, disappear. For the first time in months, Ben feels lucky.

But he is unaware that someone is watching him and Ollie. Someone who wants nothing but happiness for Ben.

Happiness…and death.

The Lucky Ones is the terrifying new thriller from the #1 Kindle bestselling author of Follow You Home and The Devil’s Work.

My review…..

I was so excited when I received an ARC of this book from the publisher (Thank you!), especially as it was a total surprise! I was disappointed to have been unable to read it until now, but wow! It was totally worth the wait!

Mark Edwards is a natural storyteller. I have loved every one of his books I’ve read so far and this was no exception.

The Lucky Ones is a psychological thriller, but this serial killer is quite different. He likes to make his victims happy! This makes him even creepier than your average psychopathic murderer. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve read it already. If you haven’t, you’ll find out. There are some chapters written from the perspective of the killer which really did make my skin crawl.

One of the main characters, Ben, is very likeable. He’s recently separated from his wife and has custody of their young son, Ollie. When things finally start to look up for Ben and Ollie, he has no idea of the danger he is facing, until Detective Imogen Evans discovers that he may be the next victim and vows to protect him.

There are so many twists and turns in this story I almost felt exhausted for Imogen and her team, racing against time to find this murderer before anyone else got hurt. There are far too many people who have lost their lives at the hands of this killer already.

It is far from straight forward and although the story unfolds a bit more gradually at first, allowing me to get to know the characters, making me question everything and suspect pretty much everyone, the pace seriously picks up before long and I couldn’t read it fast enough to find out if they got there in time. My heart was beating so fast towards the end. Gripping is an understatement!

Outstanding writing, as always. Brilliant characterisation, clever plot, twists galore, fabulous setting (not far from me). It has everything that makes a great read for me. Even a hint of romance! Just brilliant! I highly recommend and I hope this is might develop into an Imogen Evans series!(?)
