Rule #1: No Dating Cowboys.

A fake fiancé doesn’t count, right? Oh boy . . .

Amy Weaver is tired of her dad meddling in her love life. Fed up, she hires an actor to play the part of her fake cowboy fiancé when she goes home for her grandpa’s ninetieth birthday. Sure, Luke Jenkins has got looks, charm, and muscular legs, but this is business, pure and simple. Things are fine and dandy until she finds out he’s a real cowboy, not an actor. Now, she’s stuck between a rock and his chiseled jawline, falling faster than a sack of horseshoes. How the heck is Amy supposed to ignore the sparks between them and stick to her rule of not dating cowboys? All bets are off.

Beneath The Bay Bridge by Holly Martin @HollyMAuthor #ShortStory #BookReview

beneath the bay bridge (2)

Well, what a lovely little story this is. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It is offered Free when you sign up to Holly Martin’s newsletter. As it’s a short story I thought I’d give it a go in-between reads and I’m so glad I did.

Rosie is a very likeable character and it’s obvious she’s taken for granted by Leon, who quite frankly would drive me nuts. She’s a braver woman than me, jumping on a plane from London, alone, to meet him in San Francisco, especially given his tendency to forget plans. However, what she finds when she arrives at Leon’s temporary address certainly makes her wonder why she is wasting her time with him.

When we meet Cameron it’s obvious there is instant chemistry between the two of them and I totally couldn’t blame Rosie for having her eyes opened! He sounds very appealing! I was really hoping they would get together.

The bathroom scene is hilarious, it actually made me laugh out loud! Brilliant!

I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first time I’ve read anything by Holly Martin, although I do have some of her other books on my TBR list. They will be being bumped to the top as soon as possible now!

About the author (Via Amazon UK)…..

holly martin

PLEASE NOTE. Holly is not the author of Princess (The Johnson Family). That book is by a different author with the same name.

Holly lives in a little white cottage by the sea. She studied media at university which led to a very glitzy career as a hotel receptionist followed by a even more glamorous two years working in a bank. The moment that one of her colleagues received the much coveted carriage clock for fifteen years’ service was the moment when she knew she had to escape. She quit her job and returned to university to train to be a teacher. Three years later, she emerged wide eyed and terrified that she now had responsibility for the development of thirty young minds. She taught for four years and then escaped the classroom to teach history workshops, dressing up as a Viking one day and an Egyptian High Priestess the next. But the long journeys around the UK and many hours sat on the M25 gave her a lot of time to plan out her stories and she now writes full time, doing what she loves.

Holly has been writing for 8 years. She was shortlisted for the New Talent Award at the Festival of Romance. Her short story won the Sunlounger competition and was published in the Sunlounger anthology. She won the Carina Valentine’s competition at the Festival of Romance 2013 with her novel The Guestbook. She was shortlisted for Best Romantic Read, Best eBook and Innovation in Romantic Fiction at the Festival of Romance 2014. She is the bestselling author of 18 books

Longstone: A DCI Ryan Mystery (The DCI Ryan Mysteries Book 10) by L J Ross @LJRoss_author #BookReview

longstone cover

Well, what can I say? I know my review will never do this book the justice it deserves. I felt the same after reading every book in this series. I just love L J Ross’ writing and this series just gets better and better. I can’t tell you how excited I am when there is a new book out! It really is like catching up with old friends.

If you haven’t read any of this series yet, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. I would recommend reading them in order, as I prefer to do. You could read this without having read the others, but then you wouldn’t have the pleasure of getting to know some of the main characters along the way. Their stories have really developed throughout the series.

DCI Ryan has to be one of my most favourite detectives ever! I do have a teeny tiny crush on him 😉 He is a no-nonsense detective and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. We do see a softer side to him though with his relationship with Anna and with his friendship with Phillips. The banter between Ryan and Phillips is quite hilarious at times. They’re like a comedy double act and I think they get more amusing with each book.

This story involves murder (of course) and the mystery of a possible Viking shipwreck. Could history be in the making and would one of the locals really be capable of killing for some possible treasure buried at sea? When the body count rises it’s soon apparent that there is more to this story than meets the eye.

This is brilliantly written, as always. A fast-paced murder mystery which kept me guessing right to the very end, with excellent characterisation and an intricate plot with plenty of surprises along the way. There is also a bit of romance and humour and it’s set in such a beautiful part of the country which I hope to visit as soon as possible.

I have absolutely loved it and it goes without saying that I am happy to recommend to anyone and everyone!

A big thank you to L J Ross for my review kindle copy and my beautiful signed paperback 🙂 x

Eat Less by Jeremy and Georgina Jackson-Sytner @UrbaneBooks #JustEat #BlogTour #BookReview #NonFiction #Lovebooksgrouptours

Hi, I have something a little bit different for you today. I don’t read/review a lot of non-fiction, but this one grabbed my attention as soon as I saw the blog tour invite!

Welcome to my stop on the Eat Less blog tour with Love Books Group Tours 🙂

eat less poster

My review…..

Eat Less is a no-nonsense, practical guide to eating better without being on a diet. We all know fad diets don’t work and the main reason for that is that they are generally difficult to maintain for a lifetime. This books contains a lot of common sense about how to eat well and enjoy food (and wine!) whilst losing/maintaining a healthy weight in the hope of avoiding serious illnesses, the risk of which can be increased by obesity.

This book doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know really, but the way it is written makes it all sound so straight forward and achievable. I’ve found it to be very inspiring anyway. It’s the perfect guide for reading in one sitting (as I did) or for dipping in and out of for reference (as I will do).

Most of the advice given is what I have been doing my best to follow since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (in March 2018). I haven’t tried fasting, but I think I might give missing breakfast a go, a couple of times a week (to start with) when I haven’t got to go to work, and see how I go. I do get quite jittery when I’m hungry sometimes which isn’t very practical when I’m busy. It’s all about what you get used to though. I eat a LOT less carbohydrates now, as well as leaving the sweet stuff alone (obviously) and this has helped me to lose a stone. I do need to lose at least another stone though in the hope of reducing my HbA1c level. Mine is 48 which is the point where diabetes is diagnosed, so there is still the chance to reverse it, in theory. I love to eat though and I do cook from scratch. I totally agree with the authors that food should be a pleasure and there is nothing wrong with enjoying food at all. Just making a few simple changes can make all the difference to maintaining a healthy balance.

This is a very eye-catching book and one I think would easily attract attention on the shelves of bookshops. The layout is very reader friendly and straight to the point without being at all preachy. It will be on my kitchen bookshelf within easy reach at all times.

Many thanks to the authors and publisher for my review copy and also to Kelly @ Love Books Group Tours for arranging this fabulous blog tour.

The easiest way to lose weight and keep it off for life
Jeremy and Georgina Jackson-Sytner

Eat Less is a revolutionary book designed
to help people lose weight and maintain a
healthy weight for life.
Eat Less is NOT a diet book. It doesn’t read like a diet book or
look like a diet book. Eat Less is an anti-obesity manifesto.
Eat Less is stuffed with bite-sized nuggets of information on the
benefits of eating less, advice on what to eat less of, and much
more. Informative and motivational, the underlying message is
very serious, but the manner in which it delivers those
messages is never preachy and easily digestible. Eat Less offers
practical advice on the life-changing benefits that simply eating
less food can bring.
· Eat Less really works. The authors are living proof
that the habit-changing lifestyle they set out could
help millions of people easily get to a healthy
weight and maintain it for life.
· Obesity rates have doubled over the past two decades,
and 63% of UK adults are overweight, according to the
OECD.
· Full PR campaign, including national newspaper
coverage and TV appearances, already confirmed

My reviews…..

(Previously posted individually)

Book 1

Why have I never read a book by Rachel Amphlett before now??

Scared to Death is a brilliant start to a new series. I warmed to Detective Kay Hunter immediately. There’s a back story there that hasn’t been fully explained as yet, which I find very intriguing. She seems to be up against her fair share of negativity at work, via certain colleagues, although others very much seem to have her back. We also get an insight in to her personal life and her relationship with her partner, which I like as it shows a softer side to an otherwise professional character.

Kay and her team are faced with the difficult task of investigating the death of a local 17 year old girl who had been kidnapped whilst her parents were on a business trip. A ransom had been demanded, her parents had paid and not reported the kidnapping as requested, as they believed their daughter would be spared if they cooperated. When they arrive at her location, however, their worst fears are realised. Every parents worst nightmare. The way this poor girl met her end is nothing short of horrific and these parts of the story are very upsetting. Her killer is a very disturbed character.

When a second girl is kidnapped, Kay and her colleagues race against time to figure out where she is being kept before it’s too late and this time it’s personal. There is a very sick game being played which makes this a very dark crime thriller. Just brilliant!

Scared To Death is a very cleverly written police procedural with a tense and fast-paced storyline. There are many plot twists and shocks along the way. I was totally gripped and I’m very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend you add this to your reading list. It’s definitely one I would happily buy as a gift for family and friends.

Book 2

I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed Will To Live (Book 2 in the Detective Kay Hunter mystery series). Having read, and loved, Scared To Death (Book 1) last year I am sad that’s it’s taken me this long to read this, but all good things come to those who wait as they say.

I love Rachel Amphlett’s writing style. She has a way of drawing you in from the very first page and this book is as gripping as the first. I know I am going to love the rest of this series.

Kay and her team find themselves facing an horrific crime scene which, at first, appears to be a suicide on the railway, until evidence of foul play is spotted amongst what little is left of the poor victim. I can’t even imagine witnessing anything so horrendous and hope I never have to. Thankfully (not for her, of course) in this case there was a witness who saw this poor soul lose his life and although she was unable to save him she was able to confirm that he was crying for help before the train hit him which casts further doubt about his death being a suicide. Who could be sick enough to murder someone in such an evil way (not that there’s a nice way!) and is it even their first time?

Will To Live is an excellent police procedural. The end of each chapter is written in a way that made me want to read on as I NEEDED to find out what was going to happen next. I think the short chapters help to create the tension that builds during this investigation. I thought I had it sussed on more than one occasion, but the twists and turns kept me guessing right until the very end. I was holding my breath at one point, panicking along with Kay! A fast-paced and at times an emotional read.

Kay has a back story, unknown to the reader, which I am still intrigued about. We are drip fed snippets of info throughout this book, but I’m still non the wiser, so I’m keen to find out more.

Kay is a likeable character and one I am looking forward to catching up with again soon. She’s professional and very real. I like that we have an insight in to her personal life.

I love that the pregnant Molly is featured in this story! There has to be some happiness in a world of tragedy and heartache.

Book 3

I am absolutely loving the Kay Hunter series! It has been a little while since I read books one and two, but having the upcoming blog tour for book six to look forward to, in July, has given me the perfect opportunity to catch up

Rachel Amphlett’s writing is just so easy to get on with, the stories are so gripping and the character’s (on the most part) are so likeable that I find I tend to read these books fairly quickly. The short(ish) chapters always end in a way that makes you have to keep reading.

In One To Watch, Kay and her team find themselves investigating the devastating and brutal murder of sixteen year old Sophie Whittaker. There are so many suspects, all with different motives, and it seems like they might never get to the bottom of what happened, but when they do, OH MY! A jaw dropping conclusion to an excellent murder mystery.

I feel like I get to know Kay Hunter a little bit more with every book. She’s a very committed detective and has the mutual respect of most of her colleagues. However, one seems to have it in for her and I still don’t really know why. This keeps me intrigued. We also see a personal side to Kay in her relationship with her partner and the fact that they are grieving for a baby she miscarried some months before. Kay is quite a private person and chose not to tell anyone at work, but it’s obviously something that’s never far from her mind and makes her all the more sensitive to this current murder investigation.

The family secrets revealed in this story are shocking. It’s quite scary the levels some people will stoop to, to get what they want! It makes you question if you can ever trust anyone, ever!

Brilliantly written. I highly recommend!

I’ve already started Book 4.

Granny with Benefits by Marilyn Bennett @mbennett_author #BookReview

Granny With Benefits has been a very entertaining read!

Grace is 39 years old and meets Hol whilst collecting her Grandmother’s belongings from her sheltered accommodation. Unfortunately, he walks in just as she is trying on some of the clothes and he thinks she lives there so she tells him her name is Louise! I have to admit, I’m not sure how she could have looked THAT much older just by wearing different attire, but it does lead to an amusing tale of Grace trying to juggle two personas in an attempt to win Hols affections. It did remind me a bit of Mrs Doubtfire at times, but there were no fancy face masks being used here. However they didn’t all realise that Grace and Louise were the same person, as time went on, I don’t know.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Grace to begin with, but she did grow on me eventually, although her relationship with Hol did frustrate me at times. I’m not sure I found Hol all that likeable either to be honest. They are both quite childish at times, for their ages, but I guess we all can be sometimes. Things were very hit and miss between them and there are a lot of misunderstandings along the way and ignoring each other. It is a roller-coaster of a story though which held my attention as I was more than a little bit curious to discover how things would work out.

If you enjoy a romantic comedy with more than its fair share of drama then I think you will love this book.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for my review copy via Netgalley.

(I am really, really trying to make a dent in my list!)

Via Amazon UK…..

Grace is thirty-nine and not remotely convinced that life begins at forty.

When her grandmother dies she volunteers to pick up her belongings from the sheltered accommodation. It is the last place she expects to have a chance encounter with the first man she has been instantly attracted to in a very long time, particularly as she is dressed almost head to toe in her grandmother’s clothing and accessories.

Grace’s granny alter ego elicits a conversation with the man about love, death and the universe, which she is convinced would not have happened otherwise. This inspires her to throw caution to the wind and turn what should have been a simple case of mistaken identity into a dating introduction opportunity for the real her. A decision which sets Grace on a rollercoaster adventure of lies, secrets and lust, making her thirty ninth year one she won’t forget, but might well regret…

Follow Grace’s next adventure in the sequel, Mummy With Benefits, available now!

Happy reading 🙂
