Book 1
Why have I never read a book by Rachel Amphlett before now??
Scared to Death is a brilliant start to a new series. I warmed to Detective Kay Hunter immediately. There’s a back story there that hasn’t been fully explained as yet, which I find very intriguing. She seems to be up against her fair share of negativity at work, via certain colleagues, although others very much seem to have her back. We also get an insight in to her personal life and her relationship with her partner, which I like as it shows a softer side to an otherwise professional character.
Kay and her team are faced with the difficult task of investigating the death of a local 17 year old girl who had been kidnapped whilst her parents were on a business trip. A ransom had been demanded, her parents had paid and not reported the kidnapping as requested, as they believed their daughter would be spared if they cooperated. When they arrive at her location, however, their worst fears are realised. Every parents worst nightmare. The way this poor girl met her end is nothing short of horrific and these parts of the story are very upsetting. Her killer is a very disturbed character.
When a second girl is kidnapped, Kay and her colleagues race against time to figure out where she is being kept before it’s too late and this time it’s personal. There is a very sick game being played which makes this a very dark crime thriller. Just brilliant!
Scared To Death is a very cleverly written police procedural with a tense and fast-paced storyline. There are many plot twists and shocks along the way. I was totally gripped and I’m very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend you add this to your reading list. It’s definitely one I would happily buy as a gift for family and friends.
Book 2
I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed Will To Live (Book 2 in the Detective Kay Hunter mystery series). Having read, and loved, Scared To Death (Book 1) last year I am sad that’s it’s taken me this long to read this, but all good things come to those who wait as they say.
I love Rachel Amphlett’s writing style. She has a way of drawing you in from the very first page and this book is as gripping as the first. I know I am going to love the rest of this series.
Kay and her team find themselves facing an horrific crime scene which, at first, appears to be a suicide on the railway, until evidence of foul play is spotted amongst what little is left of the poor victim. I can’t even imagine witnessing anything so horrendous and hope I never have to. Thankfully (not for her, of course) in this case there was a witness who saw this poor soul lose his life and although she was unable to save him she was able to confirm that he was crying for help before the train hit him which casts further doubt about his death being a suicide. Who could be sick enough to murder someone in such an evil way (not that there’s a nice way!) and is it even their first time?
Will To Live is an excellent police procedural. The end of each chapter is written in a way that made me want to read on as I NEEDED to find out what was going to happen next. I think the short chapters help to create the tension that builds during this investigation. I thought I had it sussed on more than one occasion, but the twists and turns kept me guessing right until the very end. I was holding my breath at one point, panicking along with Kay! A fast-paced and at times an emotional read.
Kay has a back story, unknown to the reader, which I am still intrigued about. We are drip fed snippets of info throughout this book, but I’m still non the wiser, so I’m keen to find out more.
Kay is a likeable character and one I am looking forward to catching up with again soon. She’s professional and very real. I like that we have an insight in to her personal life.
I love that the pregnant Molly is featured in this story! There has to be some happiness in a world of tragedy and heartache.
Book 3
I am absolutely loving the Kay Hunter series! It has been a little while since I read books one and two, but having the upcoming blog tour for book six to look forward to, in July, has given me the perfect opportunity to catch up 
Rachel Amphlett’s writing is just so easy to get on with, the stories are so gripping and the character’s (on the most part) are so likeable that I find I tend to read these books fairly quickly. The short(ish) chapters always end in a way that makes you have to keep reading.
In One To Watch, Kay and her team find themselves investigating the devastating and brutal murder of sixteen year old Sophie Whittaker. There are so many suspects, all with different motives, and it seems like they might never get to the bottom of what happened, but when they do, OH MY! A jaw dropping conclusion to an excellent murder mystery.
I feel like I get to know Kay Hunter a little bit more with every book. She’s a very committed detective and has the mutual respect of most of her colleagues. However, one seems to have it in for her and I still don’t really know why. This keeps me intrigued. We also see a personal side to Kay in her relationship with her partner and the fact that they are grieving for a baby she miscarried some months before. Kay is quite a private person and chose not to tell anyone at work, but it’s obviously something that’s never far from her mind and makes her all the more sensitive to this current murder investigation.
The family secrets revealed in this story are shocking. It’s quite scary the levels some people will stoop to, to get what they want! It makes you question if you can ever trust anyone, ever!
Brilliantly written. I highly recommend!
