Shallow Waters (Detective Hannah Robbins crime series Book 1) by Rebecca Bradley

Shallow Waters

5/5*

I don’t listen to books often, but I won an audible copy of Shallow Waters some time ago now via a giveaway the author herself was hosting (my apologies for taking so long to listen to it, Rebecca).

I have been listening to it mostly when cooking/baking. The narration is excellent! I finished it today whilst baking cupcakes for my Dad to take to work tomorrow. He’s retiring and tomorrow is his last day! Anyway….

I have loved getting to know DI Hannah Robbins (she reminds me of Rachel Bailey from Scott & Bailey. Love that series!). Following her story as she leads an investigation into the deaths of two teenage girls has been tense to say the least. How can they be connected in different areas? The investigation picks up more pace when they realise a third girl is in real danger of being next to the morgue if they can’t find her in time. I don’t really want to say more than that as I don’t want to give too much away, but you can really sense the teams urgency and frustration as they try to put the pieces together, whilst playing by the rules.

This isn’t an easy read/listen by any means. As a parent this is my worst nightmare, but it’s a gripping story with a wonderful mix of characters. I love the relationships between the police officers. I imagine you must form quite strong bonds with colleagues when you do this kind of job, especially when dealing with these kinds of cases. I also found Hannah’s relationship with Ethan interesting, given their different and often conflicting occupations.

Shallow Waters is a brilliantly written police procedural with a very well thought out plot and shocking conclusion. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end (I’d finished baking at this point and was just sat at the kitchen table unable to switch it off!).

Many thanks again to Rebecca Bradley for my audible copy. I will most certainly be adding Made To Be Broken to my TBR list.

Description (via Amazonuk)

When catching a killer isn’t enough…

The naked, battered body of an unidentified teenager is found dumped in an alleyway and post-mortem finds evidence of a harrowing series of events.

Another teenage death with the same MO pushes DI Hannah Robbins and her team in the Nottingham City division Major Crimes Unit, to their limits, and across county borders. In a race against the clock, they attempt to unpick a thick web of lies and deceit to uncover the truth behind the deaths.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Just how far are the team willing to push themselves to save the next girl?

What readers are saying about Shallow Waters

‘A gritty police procedural, with no-holds-barred and a shocking insight to the reality of some. Dark and disturbing, yet exceptionally compelling.’ – Mel Sherratt, author of Taunting The Dead, Follow The Leader and Only The Brave.

‘Tense, compelling and utterly absorbing. DI Hannah Robbins is a force to be reckoned with.’ – Jane Isaac, author of The Truth Will Out.

‘I found it quite a creepy read, with the descriptions of a girl shut in the cage playing on my mind long after I closed the book, something that doesn’t happen too often, and that I can only put down to the writing which snuck underneath the hard skin of this reader.’
‘Shallow Waters is a complete novel but one that leaves you wanting to find out more, especially about Hannah which means that I will definitely be watching out for the next in the series.’ – C Bannister, Amazon top 300 reviewer.

‘Full of realistic detail and convincing characters.’ Woman Magazine, listing Shallow Waters after Sarah Hilary’s No Other Darkness, under ‘If You Liked That, Try These…’

Some games are hotter off the ice…

Sofia Phillips feels cursed. Her father cheated on her mother, her boyfriend cheated on her—she’s done with dating. A summer work-exchange program in Finland is the perfect escape. But instead of gaining experience as an athletic trainer, she’s cleaning toilets. Awesome. The trip is a disaster, and even better, she meets Kyle Bennett. In the sauna. Naked.

Sexy hockey player Kyle was the star right wing for an NHL team. But after an accident killed his wife and left him injured, Kyle has appreciated the “therapeutic” benefits of booze and puck bunnies. Now in Finland for the summer, he’s coaching in an elite hockey-training camp for teens. When Sofia’s grandmother decides to set her up with a nice Finnish man, Sofia recruits Kyle as her make-believe boyfriend. Neither expects their first kiss to sizzle. And neither expects, while stranded on an island during a storm, to have a scorching night of passion.

But as their charade, and then their attraction, develops into something deeper, the past comes back, threatening to destroy them. They must decide if their feelings for each other are strong enough to survive—or it will be game over.

“These two characters’ storylines wove together flawlessly and made for one hot read that had me wanting to pack my bags for my own Finland adventure.”—Cindi Madsen, USA TODAY bestselling author of ANATOMY OF A PLAYER

Congratulations to Sarah over on bytheletterbookreviews.com …..

Yesterday I was gob smacked, for lack of a better word, to discover that I had received the most votes for the Fahrenheit Book Blogger Of The Week Award. Having seen some other superb book bloggers already receiving it, I was totally overwhelmed to follow in their footsteps. Huge shout out to everyone who voted for me as it really is appreciated and still can’t quite believe it 🙂

I think the award is a fantastic idea and as I was shown lots of bookish love, I wanted to repay the love and share it with others, so, I thought I would contact Fahrenheit Press asking them to tell us a bit more about themselves as well as the idea behind the Book Blogger Of The Week Award so that people can nominate their favourite book blogs or basically just check this fab company out.

Meeting author, Tanya Bullock

On Friday (3rd June 2016) I attended Tanya Bullock’s book signing at Waterstone’s, Walsall, with my Mum, Gill. I was invited by Tanya, via Goodreads, and thought why not! So, three trains later we made it to Walsall (me and Mum are not confident travellers, but we’re getting braver these days!).

Anyway, I thought I’d share the few photo’s we took and that it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Tanya is a lovely lady and a very talented writer. If you haven’t read her books yet, you really should give them a go. I’m over the moon to have met her and to now have another two signed books to add to my collection. 🙂 I’m even going to be in a local newspaper! I’m just not sure which one!

Heat It Up: Off The Ice Book 1 (Heat It Up Trilogy) by Stina Lindenblatt

Publisher: Diversion Publishing (14th June 2016)

4/5*

Heat It Up was added to my Netgalley approved list a couple of months ago, even though I hadn’t actually requested it! Always happy to give any book a go though 🙂

When I first started Heat It Up I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to make of it, but I have to say that I have enjoyed getting to know Sophia and Kyle.

Set in Finland, somewhere I have never been to but would like to visit one day (I have two friends there who were originally pen-pals), Sophia is on a summer work-exchange program whilst staying with her Grandmother who doesn’t speak much English. Kyle is an ex-professional hockey player who lost his career due to injury just over a year ago. He’s there spending the summer coaching teenagers. There’s a spark between Sophia and Kyle more or less instantly, but they’re both cautious due to what they’ve been through before. Sophia had her heart broken by her ex-boyfriend who also crushed any self confidence she had by telling her she was boring in bed! Kyle lost his wife in a car crash caused by a drunk driver. The same car crash which cost him his career. He thinks he’s happy numbing the pain with drink and one night stands. That is until he meets Sophia. Could she be the one to help him to move on? Sophia is understandably wary of men, but can’t help but be drawn to Kyle. Could he be the one to restore her battered confidence?

They try their best not to fall for each other, but are not very successful once they share some pretty steamy love-making! They have no idea, however, how much their pasts are linked.

Heat It Up is a very enjoyable romance with likeable characters. I really wanted things to work out between Sophia and Kyle and I enjoyed the relationships they share with their friends and family. It’s a heart-warming love story and one I’d be more than happy to recommend.

Many thanks to the Publisher and author for my ARC via Netgalley.

Together they live a decrepit existence beholden to the current owners of his family’s former estate.
After years of devoting herself to John’s care, Susan is worn out and frustrated. Yet she is determined to scrape together whatever resources she can to keep John comfortable and happy. This includes stealing Demerol from the doctor’s office where she works to feed John’s ever-increasing need for pain medication.
As John’s condition continues to puzzle doctors, Susan begins to notice strange objects appearing around her house. Ever wary of creepy Old Pete, the groundskeeper, Susan decides to confront the elderly man and put an end to his snooping for good.
John suffers a critical emergency, but he is saved and is soon released from the hospital. His health begins to improve, and Susan dreams of a normal life, but her hope for a miracle transforms into a nightmare one fateful afternoon when she discovers
the true cause of John’s sickness.

(Book I of the SICK series)

But John’s disease isn’t the only blight in the Branch family.

Injured and loaded with Demerol, John Branch tells his life story from his filthy sickbed, confessing the horrific secrets of the past. Most disturbing of all, he reveals the philosophy he’s constructed around his condition and tries to indoctrinate Susan.

Will she stay with him now that she finally knows the truth, or will she put an end to the madness?

Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden.

In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees…and a collection of precious “butterflies”—young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

When the garden is discovered, a survivor is brought in for questioning. FBI agents Victor Hanoverian and Brandon Eddison are tasked with piecing together one of the most stomach-churning cases of their careers. But the girl, known only as Maya, proves to be a puzzle herself.

As her story twists and turns, slowly shedding light on life in the Butterfly Garden, Maya reveals old grudges, new saviors, and horrific tales of a man who’d go to any length to hold beauty captive. But the more she shares, the more the agents have to wonder what she’s still hiding…

When she was just sixteen, Chrissy Anderson made a life list…

…The outcome is a dream husband, a career to envy, and the kind of best friends every girl wants. Then out of nowhere…an affair. What would you do if you realized the life you created wasn’t right for you? You think you know the answer? Think again. Follow Chrissy as she lies and cheats and ultimately learns to tell the truth to herself and those that she loves.

At twenty-eight, Chrissy has been steadily checking off the boxes on her life list as she mocks the style and life choices of everyone around her. She’s got it all—or so everyone thinks. Her life begins to fall apart when she unexpectedly meets a much younger man, Leo, who makes her question just how perfect her “perfect life” really is. With the help of her no-nonsense therapist, Dr. Maria, Chrissy learns more about herself than she anticipates. But it isn’t until she stares an untimely death in the face that Chrissy is catapulted into an overdue reality check. Only then does she scramble to correct the mistakes of her past…trying to figure out if it’s her husband Kurt, her lover Leo, or both that she has to leave behind to make everything right.

Women of all kinds will be able to relate to the pressure of constructing the ideal life, only to fall short. Not everyone will agree with Chrissy Anderson’s decisions, but all will pause as they follow along on her journey to ask, “What would I do if I were her?”

The Life List, book ONE of The List Trilogy, will take you on a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows as Chrissy makes mistakes on her bumpy road to happiness. Come along for the ride and you’ll be left breathless and ready to find out what she does next in book TWO, The Unexpected List.

A journey in time through the author’s career with Staffordshire Police – from cadet to inspector – from schoolboy to man.
‘It was the practical jokes and camaraderie which kept us sane.’
The book presents a cameo of some of the events which went on behind the scenes of policing in the seventies, eighties and nineties. A lifetime of side splittingly funny tales are mixed with some sad and tragic stories which made up the ‘policeman’s lot’ along with the black humour which often served to temper the emotions and relieve the stress.
Snippets of social history – now long forgotten are recalled – the ‘Policeman’s window’, the obsessive checking of property and other routines of the day. Most of all, the absurdly funny and unusual tales recalled from a career as a front line bobby:
Vampires in Stoke on Trent? Exploding treacle tins in Biddulph? A policeman caught short on duty? Naked constables in the back of van! Find the missing body!
It was all in a day’s work.

Now a major motion picture, this movie novelization tells the story of a canine hero.

When Justin’s older brother, Kyle, is killed in Afghanistan, Justin can’t believe that his brother is really gone. Except there’s one thing that Kyle left behind .

Max is a highly trained military canine who has always protected his fellow soldiers. But when he loses his handler and best friend, Kyle, Max is traumatized and unable to remain in the service.

He is sent home to America, where the only human he connects with is Justin, and he is soon adopted by Kyle’s family, essentially saving his life. At first Justin has no interest in taking care of his late brother’s troubled dog. However, the two learn to trust each other, which helps the four-legged veteran become his heroic self once more. As the pair start to unravel the mystery of what really happened to Kyle, they find more excitement and danger than they bargained for. But they might also find an unlikely new best friend in each other.”

 Who is Eva Thorvald?

Over the years, her tastes grow, and so do her ambitions. One day Eva will be the greatest chef in the world. But along the way, the people she meets will shape her – and she, them – in ways unforgettable, riotous and profound. So she – for one – knows exactly who she is by the time her mother returns.

Kitchens of the Great Midwest is about the family you lose, the friends you make and chance connections that can define a life. Joyful, quirky or brazen, everyone lends their voice to tell Eva’s story – one that’s as heartwarming as it is irresistible, taking the bitter with the sweet.

The Swimming PoolWhat’s it about?

It’s summer when Elm Hill lido opens, having stood empty for years. For Natalie Steele – wife, mother, teacher – it offers freedom from the tightly controlled routines of work and family. Especially when it leads her to Lara Channing, a charismatic former actress with a lavish bohemian lifestyle, who seems all too happy to invite Natalie into her elite circle.

Soon Natalie is spending long days at the pool, socializing with new friends and basking in a popularity she didn’t know she’d been missing. Real life, and the person she used to be, begins to feel very far away.

But is such a change in fortunes too good to be true? Why are dark memories of a summer long ago now threatening to surface? And, without realizing, could Natalie have been swept dangerously out of her depth?

My thoughts
