Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café

Andorro Pett2

Meet Andorra Pett; with her trusty sidekick, she’s taken over a derelict café. On a mining station. It just happens to be orbiting Saturn! She’s hoping for a fresh start, away from all the drama of her old life. It’s a chance to relax and start again in a place where nobody knows anything about her or her past. But the café holds a secret, and secrets have a habit of coming out; whether you want them to or not. And being accident prone doesn’t help. The more you try to pretend that you know what’s going on, the worse it gets. Andorra’s plans for peace and quiet get lost amid the revelations and skulduggery and she soon realises that the fate of the whole station lies in her hapless hands. In space, you can still trip over your feet; the question is, will you land upright?

Andorro Pet author

A native of Brixham in Devon, Richard Dee’s family left Devon when he was in his teens and settled in Kent. Leaving school at 16 he briefly worked in a supermarket, then went to sea and travelled the world in the Merchant Navy, qualifying as a Master Mariner in 1986. Coming ashore to be with his growing family, he used his sea-going knowledge in several jobs, including Marine Insurance Surveyor and Dockmaster at Tilbury, before becoming a Port Control Officer in Sheerness and then at the Thames Barrier in Woolwich. In 1994 he was head-hunted and offered a job as a Thames Estuary Pilot. In 1999 he transferred to the Thames River Pilots, where he regularly took vessels of all sizes through the Thames Barrier and upriver as far as H.M.S. Belfast and through Tower Bridge. In all, he piloted over 3,500 vessels in a 22-year career with the Port of London Authority. Richard was offered part time working in 2010, which allowed him to return to live in Brixham, where he took up writing and blogging. He retired in 2015, when he set up and ran a successful Organic bakery, supplying local shops and cafés. The urge to write eventually overtook the urge to bake but Richard still makes bread for friends and family. Richard is married with three adult children and two grandchildren. Interview with Richard Dee…..

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

Hi, I’m Richard Dee and I live in Brixham, Devon. I write Science Fiction and Steampunk adventures. I’m a retired Master Mariner and Thames River Pilot, living in Brixham Devon, which is where I was born. I have a website at www.richarddeescifi.co.uk and you can also find me on Facebook at RichardDeeAuthor

I wanted to start writing years ago but never seemed to have the time until I retired. When I actually fired up the keyboard, I found that the more I wrote, the more I wanted to write. Ideas just poured into my head as fast as I could get them down. I now have seven novels and two books of short stories published, with several more ready to go.

I chose the self-publishing route, for the control it gave me, after hearing horror stories about author’s experiences with the traditional publishing route. I started by writing Science Fiction, which I have always loved, then I moved onto Steampunk. I found a great editor and a fantastic cover designer to make my novels as professional as I could.

I have three current series, The Dave Travise (Freefall and Myra), the Balcom (Ribbonworld and Jungle Green) and the Norlandian Steampunk (The Rocks of Aserol, A New life in Ventis and Tales form Norlandia).

All have sequels in planning, I also have spin-off novels and standalone works in the pipeline, you can keep up at https://richarddeescifi.co.uk/portfolio

I had a few ideas for the adventures of an amateur detective and was inspired by my wife and three daughters to create a female character, Andorra Pett. As well as being a composite of the ladies in my life, I like to think of her as a cross between Agatha Raisin and Miss Marple, in space! Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café is out now, Andorra Pett on Mars will be published in April 2018, Andorra Pett and her Sister is a work in progress.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

Mostly they come from snatches of dreams or overheard conversations in coffee shops or pubs. I might see something on the news which will give me an idea, or a piece about some new invention that I could use. The stories themselves are not dependant on the Sci-fi or Steampunk element; it’s rather like an extra character, the location where the story takes place and the necessary technology to tie it all together.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

As I mentioned above, Andorra Pett is based on parts of my immediate family. In my other works, it’s not so simple or clear-cut. I think that all authors would say that there is a little of them in what they write, whether it’s a hero or a villain, there’s probably a bit of me in the explorer of other worlds. I’m sure that one day in the far future, a part of my DNA will live on, will be entwined in the cells of a person standing on another planet.

How do you pick your characters names?

That’s a surprisingly difficult thing to have to do. Names are so emotive. You can use a name to enhance your plot, give a sense of whether that person is good or bad, mislead or confuse the reader and a whole lot more. Some names are synonymous with things, you can use that.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Try to imagine watching a film in your head and typing what you see. You can rewind, pause and slow the action down but you can’t fast forward. Every time I start writing, I never know what will happen. I have to keep going until I get to a good bit. Sometimes that can be after 1,000 words, sometimes 5,000.

I never know the ending until I get to it, this can leave me with several potential suspects, in the case of a murder mystery. When they are revealed, it’s as much of a surprise to me as it is to the reader.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Desmond Bagley, Wilbur Smith and Frederick Forsyth. Not necessarily in that order, I love the relentless pace they inject into the action, the believable background and their ability to describe a world in three sentences. They all provide escapism and entertainment, which is what I aspire to do.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

Isaac Asimov, I’d like to know how he thought up the Foundation trilogy in the late 1930’s, given that it was so far removed from anything else at the time.

Were you a big reader as a child?

Very much, I started on Famous Five at a fairly early age and progressed through Narnia to Sci-fi as I grew up.

When did you start to write?

I wrote a short story in 1979 and turned it into a novel in 2012. Since then I have picked up the pace a little and now do three or four novels a year. The research for them throws up a lot of short stories as well, and I get requests for sequels, prequels and spin-offs from readers, which I do my best to accommodate.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

That’s a very hard question, there are usually enough things in any novel to start a sequel without changing the ending, I would have liked The Day of The Jackal to have ended differently, with the Jackal surviving (sorry Lebel, although maybe he could have just been wounded, arising from his hospital bed to continue the chase). The book could have detailed his escape, which I’m sure would have been as meticulously planned as his attempt.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

My father’s naval career, he would never talk about what he got up to. I only found a few things out from a person I met who had shared some of them with him. Sadly I never got the chance to learn it all, but it sounded like it would have made a great memoir.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

Another tricky one, I’ve been lucky to have lived an interesting life, Cape Horn, the Amazon, a Jumbo jet crash landing, shot at by the P.L.O. and that was before I was 30! How about “Believe it or Not?”

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

I would have loved to talk about world building with Terry Pratchett.

What are you working on right now?

I have just finished NaNoWriMo, the annual challenge to write a 50,000-word novel in a month. It was my third attempt and I managed 72,000 words this year. That has to be edited, meanwhile, I have several other projects in progress. I’m currently producing an online course in World Building, to help other writers create

Do you have a new release due?

The sequel to Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café, called Andorra Pett on Mars is due out in April 2018

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

Breathe a huge sigh of relief and try not to look at the sales figures.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

My website is at www.richarddeescifi.co.uk. There are lots of freebies and a weekly post about writing. I’m also on Facebook as RichardDeeAuthor and I’ll be ramping up my twitter presence @richarddockett1

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

Dark Skies by L J Ross @LJRoss_author #BookReview #DCIRyan #Book7

Dark Skies

My review…..

Well, I have to say that I have absolutely LOVED this series. I don’t think I’ve ever read a series in such a short time, which says it all really.

Dark Skies is another brilliant book in this brilliant series. What is Lowerson thinking of though!?? I’m really worried about him! Sorry, that won’t make sense to anyone who hasn’t read this already, but I think it highlights just how much I have connected with some of the characters in these books. Dark Skies is book 7, so I really do feel like I almost know some of them personally. The way L J Ross writes her characters makes them very real and I do find myself talking about them as if they are. I was reading one of the previous books in the car a couple of weeks ago and I said to my husband, ‘Awwww, Ryan and Anna are getting married.’ Obviously Steve’s reply was ‘Who?’ Lol! I did explain, but I think he thought I was losing the plot. The characters do make these books for me, even though they are very much plot driven stories.

In Dark Skies, Ryan and his team are faced with the mysterious death of a teenage boy who surfaces from the bottom of a reservoir. He has been preserved by the bog which would have been there before the water was added and initially they have no idea how long he might have been there. Could he be a local boy who was reported missing years before, but had seemingly run away and didn’t want to be found?

Then one of Anna’s students is found brutally murdered in a seemingly random attack, so the team have their work cut out as always.

I love the police procedural aspects, the way the investigation keeps me on my toes. I love how loyal (mostly!) the team are to each other and the banter they share. I also love how Jen Lucas (great name btw!) has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons. I can’t wait to find out more about her. I just hope Lowerson comes to his senses before it’s too late.

This book has it all, as does the whole series so far. I can’t imagine any murder mystery/crime fiction fans not enjoying them. I highly recommend and can’t wait for book 8!

Many thanks to L J Ross for my kindle and signed paperback copy of this fab book. LOVED it!

#AuthorInterview with ROBIN BARONE @whereisrobinusa

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Robin Barone to Chat About Books 🙂

Robin Barone

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

The idea for my series first came from my travel blog. I was blessed with the opportunity to have time off to travel around the world and documented the experience for my family and friends. I wanted to show that people are the same wherever you go respective of differences in culture, religion, and government. My business school professor, the late Patrick Turner, encouraged me to develop a bigger perspective of my idea and suddenly a series was born.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

The central character Robin is based on myself. I am an naturally curious person and constantly asking “What if” and imagining scenarios that are possible. In this series we travel and connect to local experiences- history, culture, the outdoors. I believe that we all have different interests; whatever they are be curious and learn more about them!

How do you pick your characters names?

The central character was based off of my name and the blog. Fortunately, my name translates well to an animal character that is cute and fun loving!

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

My writing process is multi-disciplinary. I have structured time that I allocate to write; however, the stories never leave me. I could be eating dinner and suddenly a line that I was stuck on comes to me! The overall writing process is a challenge. Initially it was scary putting my stories out there in the world. They are like my children. I want to nurture and protect them. But at some point they have to grow up and live. At the heart of every book is a structure storyline. Deciding the flow and content is the most consuming part of the process, but it is important to creating a book that is timeless, fun, and not too long. Once those decisions are in place, the fun begins as I decide the action scenes and find ways to capture a moment in 4 to 6 lines.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

I am a bit of a non fiction geek and love reading the paper. My prior background is in finance and I look forward to the reading the columns posted in the NY Times from Friedman, Brooks, Bruni, as well as other commentaries from people like Byron Wein and Steve Marks. As for authors of books, my favorites are Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss! I love their use of imagination and play on words. They are timeless.

Were you a big reader as a child?

Yes! I love to read! My pediatrician had an amazing room of books in his waiting room. I used to love to go there. It was like a personal library. I am fortunate that my mom read to me nightly, and we would visit the library for story times during the summer.

When did you start to write?

My interest began as a child when I would write stories. I asked Santa Claus for a Smith Corona typewriter to begin my career. I couldn’t wait. I remember opening the book, typing my name, and then stopping. I did not have a story to tell. I joined the high school newspaper from an initial interest in becoming a journalist. Over time that evolved from current events to stories that shape s.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I am not sure there is one book that I would re-write but a group of books. I found that books were like the movies always creating happy endings. The heroine always wins. But that’s not life and in order to win there is often a lot more grit and resilience required that is never addressed. For a dreamer like me, I felt lot many stories that I read as a child set me up to fail. When I imagine my series, I wanted to maintain a reader’s sense of dreams and find a way to introduce them to the concepts of being resilient, persistent, and relentless, and trusting your inner self. Too often, particularly towards girls, they are sent contrary messages.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

The biography of Abraham Lincoln – I would have loved the opportunity to interview a complex and interesting man. He lived and lead by principles which in an environment with noise is extremely hard to stay on course. He achieved so much in his short life.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

Living a curious life.

I have lived a life with a lot of privilege all do to hard work and following my inner curiosities. Listening to my voice has taken me down different paths, and the choices that I am grateful for have all come from following my curiosity with persistence and being relentless. At times it has been uncomfortable – but growth and amazing things come from taking risks and moving forward as opposed to remaining in the same place.

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

I would love to have coffee with the character Ally McBeal, the lawyer from the television series awhile back. She was an intelligent and ambitious women who wanted a full life with love and a family. She did not believe that she would have to sacrifice one for the other, but yet she was surrounded by people who sent her different messages. I loved how they showed her inner voice and true desires. Her character was real and honest.

What are you working on right now?

Right now I am editing a book on Philadelphia which goes to print in May and working with an illustrator on developing the sketches for the books coming out in 2019!

Tell us about your last release?

Our last release is Where is Robin? Los Angeles which came out February 1st! It is our first city book which takes our central character on an epic trip around Los Angeles. Los Angeles is an amazing place to explore with culture and adventure for all ages!

Do you have a new release due?

This April we are releasing a book called Where is Robin? Washington, DC which is a trip around the capital of the United States. I am thrilled with the final product of both and grateful to all of the hard work of the talented illustrators!

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

To celebrate I am hosting a family event at a location from the book. For our book on Los Angeles, I am having an event at the Getty Villa with lunch. For our book on Washington, DC we are having a private tour of the Smithsonian.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

The best way to stay in touch is to sign up for our newsletter. We send out activities at least once a month and bring joy to our readers through art! Go to http://www.whereisrobin.org

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

The series that I authored, Where is Robin, is designed to use travel to teach curiosity! Curiosity is an important life skill which leads to increased respect, compassion, and engagement with the world. Curious people are open minded and more often happier. I nurtured my curiosity through travel, and I hope that my stories inspire people to be more curious about the world and people around them!

Many thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Robin 🙂

Ashael Rising #BookBirthdayBlitz #AuthorInterview with Shona Kinsella @shona_kinsella & #Giveaway @rararesources

Ashael Rising banner

Interview with Shona Kinsella…..

Shona Kinsella

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

My name is Shona Kinsella and I’m a fantasy author. I live in Scotland with my husband and children. My debut novel, Ashael Rising, was published by Unbound on 06/02/2017. Ashael is an apprentice medicine woman who must learn how to protect her people from soul-sucking invaders from another world.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

Lots of places! The idea for Ashael Rising came from a dream but for other stories it’s been a word or phrase that I’ve heard, a picture, something I see when I’m out for a walk, a funny thing one of my kids says …

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

No, not really. Some of my characters have certain traits that reflect people I know but not a whole character. What I would say more is that many of the relationships that I write about reflect the relationships I have had with other people.

How do you pick your characters names?

Generally, my main characters spring into my head fully-formed with their names already attached. With minor characters, I usually go for a linguistic theme. So, the names either share a common root or sound.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

Sit down at the keyboard and see what falls out. I realise that sounds glib, but it really is how it works for me. I rarely have a plan, beyond a vague idea of how the next bit of the story should go and sometimes I don’t even have that.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Only five?! In no particular order, Stephen King, Brandon Sanderson, Karin Slaughter, Kate Mosse and Terry Pratchett. But that’s just today. There are many, many authors that I admire and may pick as a favourite in a different mood.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

Stephen King, and “Can you teach me?”

Were you a big reader as a child?

Definitely, I was rarely found without a book. By the time I got my adult library card, I had read all of the children’s books, some of them more than once.

When did you start to write?

I wrote as a child and in my teens but put it aside for other pursuits, like a job. I only started to write seriously in 2014, after taking a career break to care for my children.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

The Returned by Jason Mott. I thought it was a really intriguing concept, but the end fell flat for me – nothing is resolved, and it felt like he had run out of time. I would have given it a bit more of a resolution, some explanation for the events of the book.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

No, because each book belongs to their author. If I had written it, it wouldn’t be the same book.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

My Adventure in Words

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

Is it cheating if I pick one of my own characters? I would probably choose Bhearra (the healer and spiritual leader in Ashael Rising) and take her to Tchai Ovna, a little tea house in the West End of Glasgow. They have an amazing variety of teas and the best chocolate brownies – I think Bhearra would love it there.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on book two in the Vessel of KalaDene series, Ashael Falling. In amongst that I’ve got a few projects in various stages; some short stories, two novellas and a serialised story that I’m collaborating on with a wonderful artist.

Do you have a new release due?

The serial is due to launch in spring and I hope to have two novellas out this year.

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

Have a glass of bubbly with my husband.

The Zanthar are invaders from another world who extend their own lives by stealing the life-force of everything around them. They were last seen on KalaDene 200 years ago. They have returned, looking for The Vessel, a being prophesied to hold the life-force of the land. Iwan is a slave to the Zanthar, descendant of those taken as slaves the last time the Zanthar visited this world. He is sent out as a spy, while his mother is held hostage to ensure his compliance. When Ashael meets Iwan in the forest, neither realise that she is the one the Zanthar are looking for. The fate of KalaDene and all of its people rests on her shoulders.

Cragside

My review…..

DCI Ryan and his team might have thought things would slow down a little since the demise of The Hacker, but unfortunately it isn’t to be. When a staff member is found dead at Cragside, at the bottom of the stairs, it looks as though he probably lost his balance and fell, but did he? Something seems amiss to Ryan and he’s as determined, as always, to get to the bottom of things.

I love that Ryan and Anna are attending a murder mystery evening at the beginning of this book! Brilliant!

This is quite a different case for the team and gives the book quite a different feel. It’s equally as gripping as the previous books in the series and I was glued to my kindle paperwhite again. I had intended on reading something different in between each of these books, but I have found myself having to start the next one as soon as I’ve finished. They really are addictive! L J Ross’ style of writing just draws me in from the very first page.

I love that I feel like I know the main characters really well now. The personal relationships are just getting cuter by the book! I have my fingers crossed for Lowerson 😉 I really like Lowerson. I think his character is developing really well. Ryan and Anna remind me of me and my Steve 🙂 Not that we’ve shared any of their trauma of course.

The banter between the team members makes me chuckle.

Cragside is another excellent book in this series. A series I will happily recommend to everyone.

Brilliantly written with a clever plot and excellent characterisation. You never know who you might be living and working with, or what might have gone on in their past!

I think these books would make an awesome television series. (If this happens can I be an extra please!?)

I can’t wait to start Dark Skies, book 7!

Many thanks to L J Ross for my kindle copy.

Interview with Jane Holland…..

For those who don’t know already, could you tell us about yourself and your book(s) please?

My name is Jane Holland and I write contemporary thrillers. I’ve been writing since the mid-90s, and also write other types of fiction under other names – romcoms as Beth Good, historical novels as Victoria Lamb and Elizabeth Moss, and feel-good fiction as Hannah Coates.

Where did/do you get your ideas from?

I usually start with an opening image or situation, and work from there. Openings are very important to me.

Are any of your characters based (however loosely) on anyone you know?

Maybe occasionally in the planning stages. But once a novel is underway, all the characters become entirely themselves.

How do you pick your characters names?

I dislike getting confused when reading books where characters’ names are too similar, or too many start with the same letter, so that’s a major consideration for me when choosing names. All names have a particular ‘feel’ too, so I always try to ensure a name fits a character. Sometimes I have a little fun with that, and choose a deliberately quirky name. Dickens took that to an extreme, but obviously it’s hard to be too quirky in a thriller and get away with it.

Can you share your writing process with us, in a nutshell?

I’m not sure I have a ‘process’ as such. I see writing fiction as a job, rather than an art. So I make a basic plan, and then start writing, and do any necessary research on the hoof. I try not to think too hard about a book, just let instinct take over, meaning the plot can change to fit how the story is shaping up, so long as it remains essentially true to my original plan. The slower I write a book, the harder I find it to ‘see’ the whole plot in my head as I write. So I tend to write as quickly as possible, while also editing as I go along. I hate having to rewrite, so adjust as I go alone, hoping to make my first draft the final draft. That way, as soon as I’ve finished one book, I can just start another.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

That’s a tough one and changes all the time, often according to what I’m reading! Currently something like: Lee Child, Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Sylvia Day, Anne McCaffrey.

If you could meet any author, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I would like to meet one of my favourite authors from childhood, the Victorian adventure writer H. Rider Haggard, the creator of Allan Quartermain and She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, and ask him if he’d like a cup of tea.

Were you a big reader as a child?

I couldn’t read until I was about 8, which was odd. My parents despaired. Then when I finally started to read, I leapt from Enid Blyton to Tolkien in a matter of months. By ten, I was a massive, prolific reader of fiction, drama and poetry. I read everything I could get my hands on, and as my mother was a writer too, and my father a Fleet Street journalist, we had a library of thousands of books.

When did you start to write?

I wrote my first novel at about age eleven, and continued to write poetry and some fiction for many years, but wasn’t published until I was nearly thirty.

If you could re-write the ending to any book what would it be and what would you change?

I would save Severus Snape in HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS. Poor Snape! I wept bitter tears at his passing …

Is there a book you wish you had written?

Not really. I don’t think like that.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would your title be?

The Woman Most Likely To Write Anything.

If you could invite any fictional character for coffee who would it be and where would you take them?

Jack Reacher – probably to an American diner I used to frequent years ago called Route 66.

What are you working on right now?

I’m writing a thriller set on the lonely heights of Dartmoor.

Do you have a new release due?

FORGET HER NAME, a psychological thriller due out January 25th.

What do you generally do to celebrate on publication day?

Write my current novel. Have a latte and a slice of carrot cake at my local cafe. I’ve had dozens of publication days over the years, so I’ve become a little immune to it all.

How can readers keep in touch with you?

Twitter is best: https://twitter.com/janeholland1

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

Two kookie facts: my mother was the prolific romance writer Charlotte Lamb, and in my twenties, I was a semi-professional snooker player, ranked 24th in the world for women’s snooker!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Jane 🙂
